Actually, we used to call them Flids.
Thalidomide was a drug which came out in the 70's (I think)
when taken by pregnant women it resulted in deformed babies. The main deformity was the lack of developed arms or legs. They looked like they had their hands attached to their shoulders.

It came out in 1960 and people affected by it were born in the same year as me 1961

Ironically it was taken by pregnant mothers to lessen the effects of morning sickness. I think it has some more subsequently discovered benefits now in the treatment of cancer aids and other nasties.

It is a good cruel joke.
