When I got this game I thought to myself "Woohoo! Matrix game YEAH!"

That was about it really. 3 words too say about it. Don't fucking bother. It may sound harsh but it is the biggest pile of stinking Horse cack I have ever had the misfortune of playing in my 20+years of playing games. Visually it has impressive bits and the info you learn about the Matrix behind the scenes is great but what it lacks is a decent control system and what should have been quite rigorous playtesting as well.

So far I have had the game crash on me once in the middle of a level for no apparent reason and have the character I've been controlling get stuck in a position that you can't maneuver out of twice, which is about 3 things too man Wouldn't be so bad but I have a Gamecube and I've never had an experience like that on any console I've ever played on.

There are alot of inconsistencies in the gameplay as well such as you can run up walls that are at 90 degress to the floor but when it comes to a round tunnel it doesn't want to do it. There is the task arrow which shows you where to go and when you have gone past an item. The poor design with the save game feature constantly interrupting your game and some real stupid save prompts (like the chateau level where you have just beaten to a pulp a number of 'undead' creatures and then you save the game and then enter the main hall for about 3 seconds, go through a door and then save again and fight 2 more creatures and then go through another door and then your prompted to save again. Autosave, its not hard is it? Timesplitters 2 does it, James Bond does it, in fact every other GC game I have does it except the Matrix.

The 'hack' feature is a bit basic and gives you access to cheats and special weapons and so on but its not enough to save the game from being abysmal.

If you feel you ,ust then buy a copy that someone else has traded in because there will be alot of these on the market.

To sum it up:

Controls that are a bit on the iffy side.

Poorly conceived level design (don't get me started on the driving levels!) and a complete lack of playtesting and bug finding.

The game is a not just a pile of horse cack, it is a steaming pile of horse cack with flys buzzing around it.

I give this game 3 out of 10.

Save your money or buy ANYTHING else, don't touch this game unless you really have to!

I think this is a bit harsh? Infact fuckin well OTT!

The problem anything to do with the matrix has is that it is to do with the matrix. We expect to be blown away.
The game really isnt that bad at all. The bullet time works nicely. And the driving levels (I thought) were nicely done. Im sick to death with not being challenged by driving games but this did.
There is better out there to be honest but if you want max payne with brass nobs.... Enter the matrix (and max payne won a bafta for fucks sake!)

7/10

Then you didn't manage to get stuck on top of other vehicles whilst on the driving levels then? Or trapped in places of no return on the driving and on foot levels? The poor AI of the game e.g when you do a 'quiet' takedown and get spotted by another npc and it stands there not shooting you or its trying to hit you but its not being registered didn't bother you? Yes I was impressed with bullet time but considering that you could quite easily finish the game with out using bullet time its quite pointless really.

How can you be challenged by driving levels when your operator is saying "Turn left, turn right" and when you are on the rail gun levels playing as Ghost all you have to do is hold down the fire button and shoot anything that isn't you with no detriment to your health or having to worry about reloading your weapon?

And as for some of the mid level boss fights. Hit them one way for a certain number of hits and then another way for a certain number of hits and then they die. Thats what happened on the Ghost vs Trinity level anyway. Punch her, kick her then throw her. Not exactly difficult.

I gave it that mark because it was a poorly designed hodge podge of a game. Yes it does give some insights into the matrix but the controls are sloppy, the level designs were bad and the playtesting and bugfinding was inadequate. The game isn't a polished product. It feels like it was rushed and I believe Shiny are doing the Terminator 3 game and instead of releasing it wit the movie as was planned they are now testing it for bugs and glitches properly as opposed to a rushed job that they did with the Matrix. Still only gets 2/10. still a steaming pile of Horse Cack with flies buzzing around it.

Yes! The game cube and x box versions have had dodgy controls aswell
I've got it on the PS2 and it handles the whole thing great.
(PS always has had the better controls)

Maybe I'm expecting too much from game developers such as fully testing the games before release then? Landing on a car is funny the first time it happens but when it happens time and time again it becomes tedious, especially on the rail gun levels which effectively leaves you stuck. Driving through the flood channels after the aitport levels and getting stuck on the wall with no way forward or backwards aint much fun either. The Chateau where every 15 seconds, sometimes less, you are asked if you want to save contrasted with the Reactor levels where the save points are so infrequent. Yes the cutscenes look nice but it cant make up for poor design, lack of play testing and dodgy controls.

And they have now pushed back the release date of the T3 game Ronin. Maybe because they know that they didn't polish the game enough?

Oh and one more thing, if it is such a wonderfully designed game then why is it that you suffer no damage at all while surrounded by computer controlled characters and you use the silent take down move? They all stop shooting the exact moment you use it. Try it out on any level where there is a large number of computer controlled characters like the reactor levels.

The T3 game is apparently going to be along similar lines as Enter the Matrix. Unlockable content showing stuff around the story line. Sound familiar? I should have read the Gamespy reviews and got Zelda instead.

Have done mate and I got pissed on. Seriously sirk take it back and if you've got a PS2 get it for that. Its the nicer version of the game. I borrowed my cousins gamecube version and I agree. It is very dodgy. I got flash backs of maxpayne going through a wall after a explosion. Very strange?
