Is there a part of world history that you think of has being the worse thing that ever have happend to humanity for instance the Jewish Holocaust or more recently 9/11.
What for you is the thing that when you read about it or watch film footage about it makes you glad you wasn't involved ? Or makes you wonder how one human being can commit such atrocities to another human being ?

it has to be the nazis, the way they destroyed other humans in such a "civilised" way, and brought about the 2nd world war

This made a lot of people mad and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Have to agree with you Hugo i often wonder however if we had the same accesability to news reports, film footage etc to something like the persecution of the Catholics in Ireland during Cromwells reign would we see that has being just as horrific.

no, you wouldnt, thats irish propaganda. according to most historians now, there were brutal massacres in ireland, at drogheda etc, but they were all combatants (protestant and catholic, irish and english). cromwell was a bigot, but not as evil a monster as he is portrayed

i don't want to excuse the nazis, but without them western liberal democracy would be very different. an example would be that after ww2 we saw the setting up of the UN. yeah i know it's been shown to be a bit shite , but think of all the programs they have done post 1945 ( although the idea that HIV was spread in the 60s via bad needles sounds v. frightening).

changing an aspect of history is never a good idea ( any sci-fi buff will tell you about time lines)

as far as horrifying aspects of history , well there are far too many.i could cite a personal interest in the english ( yes english , and predominantly south east england- with reference to class struggle of course) oppression of the irish and painting them out to be the "thickies" of the empire ( note the potatoe famine was more about class than race though) the same thing has been tried on the welsh , re.-"taffy is a moron, taffy is a thief, taffy came to my house ,and stole a side of beef"): but then there is also the the black hole of calcutta, the spanish going into south america, the north american indians, religeous wars in europe, japan and china in the 30s, the roman desire to "civilise", the spartans view on human integrity...the list goes on.

the point is that history is something to learn from ( something i am trying to teach my son who cannot see the point in history lessons).

Wow, kinda hard to follow that post, but I think one of the stupider things that have happened in recent history is when California voted For prop. 209 (I think that is what is was) and now the local governments are not recognizing it. BTW, that Propisition was to legalize Pot for people with Cancer, glacoma, ect. to lessen their pain and help then eat and things like that. There are some "Pot Clubs" that sell a certin amount with a doctors perscription, but it is illigal to purchase, possess or distribute the pot, even under this prop. Very insane.

One of the more tragic things in recent history has to be the Oaklahoma City bombings. That was pretty bad. All those People died for nothing. But seems to be the way that history is. People die for nothing for sommat they don't understand.
