Having bought PlanetSide a few days ago [after my lil bro NoneSuch got it], I'm quite certain that I've found the best multiplayer ever. It's set on some distant planet where humankind has settled and is now, quite predictably, at war.
Exaclty how you play it depends on the individual, but my brother and our squad and I have been riding around the countryside in a tank and finding baddies to slaughter and bases to hack into [my speciality].
The 'aim' of the game seems to be personal advancement, you gain points by aquiring little victories for your faction [I'm for the Terran Republic], and use the points to advance your skills. For example, I can hack into enemy bases and take them for my faction, and NoneSuch has a bloody great armoured MAX suit and can drive a tank. There's also aircraft, buggies and motorbike-thingys available for transport, and engineering and medical skills to work for.
A lot of the fun and xp points in the game comes from fighting together in a squad, but you can go solo. It's harder alone though, unless you're good enough to be a one-man-army.
The graphics and scenery are really beautiful, but you need broadband or something similar if you want the full effect.
My verdict - 9.5/10 [.5 taken off for lag]
