My new avatar is a vector version of this photograph (http://www.dogbomb.co.uk/20030529-haircut/hair-step12.jpg), taken when I cut my hair, then shrunken and made into a gif.

Why did I use vectors? For a number of reasons... I wanted to test out my Illustrator skills. The vector was created using Adobe Illustrator.

There are a number of cool things you can do with vectors. For example... you can make it ANY SIZE you like, without any loss of quality. Unlike gifs and jpgs.

Here is a bigger version of the avatar.

Secondly... you can change aspects of the image without losing quality. I can change the width (fatness) of my face. Make my eyes non cross-eyed. Add sunglasses, ears, make-up... etc.

With a few simple color changes... I can become an evil Ronald McDonald.

Vectors are made up of lines, and are mathematically calculated to give the files a very small size in comparison with a finalized gif or jpg. This image is 211kb. It will stay roughly at 211kb, no matter how large I make it, no matter how many colour changes I make...

...and it won't lose quality!

Here are the lines used to make up the image. Transparent face fun!

Oh, and everyone else should have a go with a vector program! Post your results here.

Umm, thanks for the lesson... =/

Doggy, would it be possible for you to allow use to use little flash files for our avatars?

No. The noise would be fucking atrocious... and anything else you should be able to make into a small gif.

Under the condition there where no sounds or anything like that? Obviously you'd have to vet them first.

No. I really can't see anything you could do in a 100x100px flash which could convince me to allow them.

I don't think anything was meant to draw stuff like that.

I did the spock picture using Illustrator, then imported the frames into Image Ready to create the animation. Like it?
