Would you like to see what is suggested in the following news story happen or when you finnish work are you just ready to go home and put your feet up.?

The UK's towns and cities need a continental-style cafe culture during the evening and fewer pubs, a group of MPs has said.
A parliamentary committee said the proportion of drinking venues in town centres was too high.

When the sun goes down, it said, central streets and squares become the preserve of alcohol-fuelled entertainment venues aimed predominantly at the young.

The Commons Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Committee have urged Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to spearhead a drive to create more of a mix.

It said town centres needed to be more "inclusive", encouraging more people to stay on after shops and offices close rather than returning straight to their homes in the suburbs.

Yet another classic example of politico's pointing out the staggeringly obvious. They're just jealous of all the fun us young'uns are having. I'm willing to bet that there will now be several "information gathering" trips to European centres of cafe culture, at the taxpayers expense.

Another marvelous endevour into social engineering...

Hey! Politicians! Leave them people alone!
Pink Floyd was onto something...

What the hell business is it of theirs what PRIVATE businesses should pop up and prosper in any given section of town...

as if it isn't hard enough to run a business in the first place, keep customers happy...

Moronic socialist society builders...they building nothing,
they merely prune what grows naturally out of human ingenuity and initiative into some distorted convoluted functionally useless token of contrivance that they pull out of their arse "for the good of society"

Freedom means freedom damnit.

Obviously you folks there have it a bit worse than us here in the states...but it's still such a sickening mess.

How dare they intrude like that....that merchants are so good as to set up shops in the first place, only to have some snooty government slob come in and tell you your establishment isn't up to societal snuff? BUGGER OFF DIMWITS!

I don’t think you have to get rid of /reduce pubs or alcohol to make town centres more accessible.. I think it’s rather the way pubs and alcohol are dealt with .I’ve just been to see my brother who lives in Bilbao, N.Spain and there they have numerous small bars, cafes and restaurants in close proximity. On Sundays particularly the whole place is alive with people, young, old, children and babies. It suddenly struck me whilst there that this doesn’t happen in the UK not because of the weather, which is actually very similar in N.Spain to the UK but because of the licensing laws which ban children form bars. It was only when I saw such a spectacle of vibrant life that I realised what an uptight Victorian system we have in place in the UK. It could also be something to do with the bastardisation of town centres by corporate planners to make them into lifeless American style cash processing shopping malls (mauls). Ahhh…progress.

PS Maxim,
Please elucidate

“Obviously you folks there have it a bit worse than us here in the states...” in what respect?
“Moronic socialist society builders”…….who are these people and where are they hiding? I was unaware of socialism in this country in any shape or form for at least the past 20 years.

Well, that's what the crack dealers and pimps in Hackney and the West End keep saying but these damned socialists keep trying to stop them. What can you do?

Moronic socialist society builders...they building nothing,

Yeah. Our terrible socialist government that keeps building luxury housing in the capital at the expense of those who really need the housing like nurses, teachers, binmen, service industry workers... again, what can you do?

Im seriously worried. about the housing situation !!

Im on a pretty good wage, it gets me by anyway, but i would need to be earning at least £60,000 a year just to get anything half decent anywhere south of watford gap. my only choice is to move north, but no offence but i dont get on with Northern Monkeys !! joke. serioulsy, i love my lifesyle down here.

I wish i had bought something 5 years ago, i would be laughing now, the government think we have never had it beter because everyone has made huge profits from there homes, but they forget about the first time buyers !! you cant get a 1 bedroom studio flat rabbit hutch for less than £180,000 now. its disgusting.
