View Full Version : Chipped Ps2's
PooperScooper Jun 20, 2002, 17:01 Hey, has anyone here had there Ps2 chipped? I'm thinking of getting mine chipped. What are your experiences with your chipped ps2? Is it any good. Do you have difficulties trying to back-up games. Do you know of any sites that sell Back-up games? I have already found a couple but the look ameturish and don't want to risk sending them my dollerz.
Tell me what you think
Who on earth would want to chip up a PS2? It's like saying, "Hey man I'm going to get my car dented...Rock on!"
And you want to backup over the discs? Jesus man I know the PS2 is dissapointing but if you're just gonna trash it send it to me.
PooperScooper Jun 21, 2002, 20:41 Erm ... what are you talkin about?
Just pulling your leg and playing on your words a bit. From what I've heard chipped PS2s are great and I haven't heard of any problems with the chips.
buggerlugs Jun 21, 2002, 22:25 Yeah, you sure can get them chipped up. You can do it the stupid way, the nasty way or the easy and expensive way.
The stupid way is to get a "neo key" this requires you to solder 1 wire inside the PS2. Quite a few PS2 backups can detect a Neo key and stop the games booting so its a pointless escapade. You also need an action replay cartridge for this to work which is another £30.
The nasty way is goto a regional computer fair in the UK and buy a £3.50 "NEO2" or "NEO3" chip and fit it yourself. Its a icky job, requires a special cool very small 15W soldering iron, a steady hand and 8 bits of wire. The downside of this is you will need to have an action replay 2 card to boot your "backups", also some EA games won`t work on this chip. Also this chip can stress your PS2`s laser which means more wire modifications later. Sometimes the chaps at the fairs will fit em for you for anything upto £50.
The other method is find someone who has got a shed load of chips called "messiah-lite" (sony jumped on Messiah`s production crew before they could get it finalised but some of the last beta chips are still on the market). The messiah has over 20 wires, and involves the soldering skill of a genius but will play any ps2 backup including booting up and dvd games. The people who sell these are usually fitting them aswell. I`ve known people pay anything upto £100 for getting one of these sods fitted. The short supply means the chips change hands for anything upto £50-60. There is talk of a messiah 4.5 on the market but i`ve not come across any yet.
Personally, I`ll wait until someone comes out with a simple plug in card that allows you to do it with no hassle and less cost.
PooperScooper Jun 21, 2002, 23:04 Yup, I've also heard this thing called an External Neo key. Its like a little box and you only gotta connect one wire that doesn't need to be soldered and then another wire to the USB Port. But I think I'd rather get the messiah cuz it also lets you play DVD's from any region.
What about actually backing up the games. Have any of you had difficulties doing that?? I would imagine that normal compact disc games are easy to back up. But there are some large DVD discs that may cause problems. of course your gonna need a DVD RW drive and some DVD-R's... which in itself is a problem because they are gonna burn a hole in yer pocket.
buggerlugs Jun 21, 2002, 23:44 Backing up is no problem, just using nero or clonecd on no more than 4 speed to burn most ps2 cd`s. DVDR is coming down in price now, decent dvdrs are about 47p each if you know where to buy them from. Still some groups are releasing dvd ps2 games on cd`s, so anythings possible.
mark knipe Jun 22, 2002, 00:44 Owning a game shop, but also owning a chipped ps2, some words of warning for you, if you are going to chip your ps2, do it after the warranty period has expired, just in case you have to have any work done on it. Don't know what its like over there but sony here tends to frown apon psx and ps2 that get sent in with mods.
dave brown Jun 22, 2002, 19:44 My PS2 got chipped when I dropped a cup on it, so I sellotaped the piece back on and it's worked fine since then. does this affect my warranty or something.
Or does using glue on chipped PS2'S stop me playing my nintendo, or something! I'm confused ?
netniV Jun 23, 2002, 18:40 No, but it does show what an intensely stupid person you are from thinking that your CD holder was actually a cup holder!
fatboyfat Jun 23, 2002, 23:15 I've got a PS2 that's been chipped with a messiah clone. Bought it that way with a year's guarantee from the seller. Paid £320 including 10 (copied) games.
Really impressed with it. I've got a DVD-RW drive and it plays all the backups i've made just fine (once I found some DVD-Rs it liked!).
Bengaul Jun 24, 2002, 17:38 You can buy a memory card over the net tht allows you to watch DVD's from any region, that is the best way to do it. It also acts as a "chip" in some respects, much safer!
So what's the deal (maybe it's because I'm from the center of capitalism here) with all these people wanting dvd's and games from other countries?
netniV Jun 25, 2002, 15:38 Because they are cheaper, that does apply to capitalism, remember?
I'm just saying that where I am they supply all the best games and movies. I would never think of buying a chip because I don't need one.
