Quick question... how do you know if you have USB 2.0 or not?

(yeah retarded I know - it's pretty fucking stupid, but I was wondering if I could access something in XP to tell me as I'm pretty much clueless)

Shirly it would be backwards compatable no?

start
control panel
system
hardware
device manager
USB controllers
--and have a look at the properties

If it's USB 2.0, it'll say. If it's USB 1.x, it probably wont. Unless your machine is < 1 year old, it'll probably be USB 1.x

USB 2.0 is indeed backwards compatible with 1.x, but your transfer rate will obviously only be 10Mb/s, where I think USB 2.0 gives around 400 Mb/s.

If you're on a notebook, you're stuck with whatever version of USB you've got.
(unless you can get PCMCIA - USB 2.0 dongle??)
If you're on a desktop, get a USB 2.0 or FireWire card.

Hope this helps

I think most usb 2 thingy's are backwards compatible to usb 1 so my guess is you wont have a problem. I once had a jukebox zen that was usb2 and I only had usb 1 installed and it worked perfectly.

The physical connection itself is the same so everything designed for usb2 will work with usb 1/1.1 the difference is in the bandwidth used along the transfer, USB2 is basically a more efficient way of transferring data over the slightly older usb1 socket. The point of USB was to create a new common interface to do away with the different types of connections used in computers and therefore make things simpler for novices, this means that upgrades to the structure have to be backwards compatible or it defeats the whole object.

Dogbomb, are you saying that you can charge an iPod via FireWire, but not via USB 2.0?

That's interesting.

Well, it's not really, but I'm dead boring, so it interests me.
