Planetarion is space game played online in real time and lasts usually 3 months. The next round (11) is due to start in a couple of weeks. Anyone can play it. Here's the website address for more information.

http://www.planetarion.com/

This is taken from the introduction:

Planetarion is a space-themed game which is played through your web browser against thousands of other players around the world. All you need to play Planetarion is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser that can display images.

Planetarion is a real time game, in which the action is divided into 'ticks' , which means that events in the game (such as combat, construction etc.) happen each 'tick'. Prior to the 'tick' you can cancel or change most of your instructions. The ticks happen each hour, on the hour, and there are as a result 24 ticks each day. The game is free to play for two weeks from the date of your account creation, after which you need to pay in order to continue.

The Payment Page has all the details on payment that you should need, but feel free to ask The Support Team for further information should you need it. The game itself lasts around 2-3 months. (The current round which started ticking on the 13th of September 2003, was due to end around the start of December 2003, but due to recent changes in the management of Planetarion, this will likely be towards the end of December or start of January).

The aim of the game is to simply be the #1 in the whole game universe. Players are ranked by Score , which is gained from various actions such as stealing asteroids from other players, and destroying ships in combat. Becoming the best is of course not easy, as there are thousands of other players all trying to do the same thing, and without an alliance of people to help you attack and defend, it's going to be a very hard task indeed. These alliances are player-formed, and you can apply to join them within the game on the Alliance page. There are many alliances, of varying size and skill level. And finding the right alliance for you, and working with it, can be very helpful to you within the game.

Once you pick a race, you start off in one of thousands of galaxies in the game that consists of ten planets each. Theres quite a lot of politics involved; an appointed Galatic Commander elected by those within your the galaxy appoints players as his/hers Minister for War, Communication and Development. The best part of Planetarion is the combat, whether attacking other players or defending your own planet or friends from attack. You get the chance to build up your own fleet of space craft from resource extracted from asteroids. Your score is calculate by how your planet develops and battles won/lost. Its best to be part of alliances who can help defend you and can organise attacks. Attacking alone is never wise and can be costly. Theres a lot of teamwork involved.

It can be a lot of fun and played around the world. The good thing about Planetarion is you don't have to sit all day in front of your computer to play.

So anyone thinking of playing?

Nah. I have a sex life that doesn't require the removal of bodily effluvia from Norman Tebbit posters, thankyou very much.

Thats the good thing with Planetarion. You can log in once a day for about five minutes, and that's it. You can still enjoy a healthy sex life and feel happy in the knowledge youre not part of the geekoid fraternity. Anyway I havent played it in ages, but I admit I am a bit of a geek.

It's been 3 years since I've played Planetarion. I might give it another go *shrug*

A dogbomb galaxy would be cool.

Theres been quite a few changes since you last played Kormiic, so have a good read up. I'm going to play this round and see how it goes. I'm sure you would find it more fun in a galaxy with people you know, so a Dogbomb galaxy would be a good idea.

Round 1 - 4 were great fun. Each round they introduced more changes to make the game more appealing. Unfortunately the problem they didnt address were two alliances ruling the game, which went on each round, making it impossible for players to get anywhere, so it became less enjoyable so I gave up after round 5. Now there looks to have been a lot of positive changes without two alliances deciding the outcome of the round, there appears to be more competition with the top 4 alliances progressing into a final battle.

Here's a review of the game around when I last played.

The last round it was $20 for 3 credits, but the pricing may change for the next round scheduled to start in a couple of weeks.

Have you played Planetarion before Ken?

Planetarion is a very addictive game. At college, EVERYONE was addicted I remember someone once uttering the words, "I'm not addicted, I just NEED to play."

The main problems with Planetarion if you got your arse knocked to the ground, if was near impossible to pick yourself back up again and catch up with the front runners. If you pay however much for a game, then get your balls busted, landing you firmly within the intermediates for the rest of the game, it's a bit annoying. Also, without a unified galaxy you have no chance, so unless you set up your own galaxy with your mates, you're screwed.

That was a major issue people raised by round 3 or 4, where it became impossible for anyone outside the main alliances to get anywhere (non-threatening galaxies run by smaller alliances were used as roid farms). That problem doesnt seem to be quite so bad now. As its between rounds alliances are busy recruiting before the next round starts (check alliances forum via the main link) so you have some time to join up with a fairly decent alliance. Afaik, the rules are still the same and you have the option to join the galaxy of your choice using a secure password. This prevents you landing up in a newbie gal (so in theory you can be in a galaxy of friends).
