Just read on Reuters: http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=1ZENEG02ZMDCSC RBAE0CFEY?type=topNews&storyID=454117&section=news

Summary: Two Surry PCs arrested for rape, their names are published in plain view (and will probably be in all the papers by tomorrow).

I think everyone would agree that this is a pretty dispicable crime, and if they're found guilty by all means let the world know what a pair of cunts they are, they deserve what they get. However I think that publishing their names before any verdict has been reached is just plain wrong. On the other hand their accuser will remain anomymous even if they are found not guilty.

I think that all parties in a case such as this should remain anon till a verdict is reached, what you think?

The courts publish the names of the accused, that was my point (sorry if I didn't make it clearer).

I think this is despicable, whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"

it has happened so many times before, that people accused of horrific crimes such as rape or paedophilia as basically judged as guilty by the media, and thus by the general public.

I think it should be made law that their names should be protected untill after they are proven guilty, and if they are cleared - should not be published.

The person who has been raped (or alleged to have been raped) is allowed annoynimity, so why should the person who is accused of committing the crime not be.

Yup, I agree that they should remain anonymous, the same rights as the victim.

Well this is about the best i could uncover due to lack of time.
It mainly centres on John Leslie

Interesting quote in there about returning the law to "how it was in 1976"

Not too sure what it was in 1976 nor (obviously) the reasons for changing it, but i will find out because i cant see what the benefits are/were.

Anonimity for all.

I think given that for every 100 rapes commited only 6 perpetrators will be convicted the issue of anonymity for the accused is far less important than looking at the rules on cross examination of the victim which has led to thier suicide on more than one occasion.

The laws need to be revamped. If they were different, I would have gone to court.

Definately anomynity for all parties and name the perpetrators after when found guilty.

Rape is a tough one to call, men need protecting from psychotic lying toe rag women too ya know.

Guilty then you get named. Otherwise, no no no no no you cant do that to potentially innocent people.
