Who does everyone reckon were the most original game characters? In other words who stood out as different from the usual 'big breasted woman' or 'barbarian with big sword'?
A few to start with:

Dizzy - An egg with boxing gloves, how cool was that?
Sonic - A Bright blue super fast hedgehog
Seymour - A lump of putty with legs and a face
The thing from Kula World - A multicoloured beachball.

Ryo Hazuki, The Main Charcter From Shenmue. Instead Of Having Massive Guns, Or Huge Muscles, This 18 Year Old Was A Classically Trained Martial Artist Who Faught With A Philsophical Approach.

Well, Either Him OR Lugio Mario, I Mean He Was Ace. A Bigger, Greener Version Of Mario Mario, How Original Was He! (Still Great Tho)

Seymour was a rip-off of Dizzy.

Original Games character... try the Evolving rabbit in Vib-Ribbon...

or the entire gang from Parappa the Rapper! Especially his "rapping teachers"!

Anyone remember Head over Heals?

A dog head and a cat head, which could combine into a super dog/cat head thingy. Now thats original.

I had it on my old Amstrad CPC. Probably came out on other 8 bit machines too, try a C64 or speccy emulation site.

It was actually a very good arcade/puzzle game.
