I strongly advise anyone thinking of getting some foreign exchange at their local Post Office.
Despite having a stack of leaflets advertising the service the woman behind the counter had no idea how it was done and at one point asked me 'What do you want it for?'
Finally I got my €1800 and €800 travellers cheques. Imagine my surprise when the German banks wanted 4% to cash the 'no commision' cheques!
On my return, I took the remaining €300 to change back at the same PO. The same woman was there. She said they couldn't change them back, despite what it said on the little pouch the notes came in. She told me I'd have to walk 2 miles to a main PO to have them changed. I did so. Guess what? They said they can only be changed back at the issuing office! I explained what I had been told at the original office. The guy said 'I don't know why she told you that'. At this point, I made a bit of a scene. Cue telephone calls between the 2 offices. After half an hour at the counter, the guy finally said 'we can change them just this once, as a goodwill gesture'!
