View Full Version : Nirvana.... overated?
mrbleepbleep Apr 5, 2004, 11:00 seeing as it's the anniversary of Kurt Cobains death perhaps i should ask...
are nirvana one of the most overated bands of the last ten years? were their songs REALLY that great? does anyone NOT like the nevermind album (i am one - love bleach though)....
any opinions?
daidavies Apr 5, 2004, 11:22 They didn't do anything The Pixies hadn't already done.
magicguppy Apr 5, 2004, 11:46 I thought they were class, and so was Cobain, but there is a ridiculous amount of hero-worship, idolism gone on since that day.
He was a bit of a junky fuck-up, a wee bit negative and not all that cheery, but a fantastic singer/songwriter.
Don't love the man, like the music.
stupid face Apr 5, 2004, 12:20 I dont think they were/are particularly overated. They were decent enough and its more the impact they had that gets talked about rather than how good they were as a band.
i think that perhaps they were slightly, but it was definately NOT their fault.
The media just jumped on him and said he was going to be the next mega god, and he sort of was, but its impossible to live up to the sort of hype that surrounded nirvana.
Blaggard Apr 5, 2004, 14:52 I was never really that big of a Nirvana fan. They were important in thier way though and I can definatly see what the big deal about them was.
I always just thought Soundgarden were far more relative and intelligent.
World Of Weird Apr 5, 2004, 16:06 Never did like them, and thought it was fucking stupid that MTV opened 'counselling' phone lines to console teenagers after Kurt killed himself...
I could've done with them when the Bangles broke up however...
postal postie Apr 5, 2004, 17:13 i think they were overrated. sure they brought grunge music to the masses, but really, after the album bleach they went too poppy with their sound.
bleach is their best album.
butchspangly Apr 5, 2004, 17:59 Ive got Nevermind.........good album, my question is would he be as idolised if he hadnt done himself in?
and something for WoW...........................enjoy!

Never did like them
now theres a surprise!
My opinion here can safely be summed up with one question.
Why is there a question mark in the thread title?
Ronin Da Bomb Apr 6, 2004, 00:01 Nirvana.... overated?
YES!
Terribly
/me Sticks On Some Pearl Jam
hugo-a-gogo Apr 6, 2004, 09:37 you know what 'pearl jam' is don't you?
and sticking on it isn't nice
Nirvana came along at the right time with a lovely video and a 'sensitive' pretty-boy rebelling-against-nothing lead singer to cash in on 'the next big thing'
they were no more revolutionary than the stooges or hüsker dü or countless others who didn't suck the MTV cock enough

dogbomb Apr 6, 2004, 16:19 Kurt Cobain overrated.

World Of Weird Apr 6, 2004, 16:26 CONVOLUTING LINK...

Couldn't have put it better myself.
The unplugged album is fucking class. But From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah has the fucking worst production since Joy Division's STILL album.
postal postie Apr 6, 2004, 17:40 fantastic singer?
not likely.
he was a product of the style.
i.e sing a bit rough cause that's what the genre of music is.
i also hear other people saying of his totp apearance when he sang really incoherently and quite that he was taking the piss out of totp. more like he was drunk and couldn't be assed.
but he is a music icon.
dogbomb Apr 6, 2004, 17:50 postal: try and get hold of some of their other high profile corporate television appearances... he was taking the piss, plain and simple.
butchspangly Apr 6, 2004, 18:47 dunno if anybods interested.................

Nirvana, regardless of their own material, are easily the best covers band in the world.
thevinesrok Apr 6, 2004, 22:57 To an extent yeah Nirvana are over-rated but only in the sense that today so many people do idolise them, wear the hoodies, believe they invented grunge etc, and often without having much knowledge of the band. I don't care how cliched it has become to like Nirvana because i really do, and i agree Bleach was their best album, nevermind is good, but in a different way, it doesnt sound like nirvana if that makes sense.
ps. don't get me started on bloody unplugged, gah. they never actually wanted to do it.
TheMadBaron Apr 7, 2004, 00:34 Nevermind was a brilliant album.
Everything else they recorded was truly terrible. Strange, that.
Crediting them with inventing a genre is ridiculous.
Grunge isn't even a proper genre.
Pearl Jam are completely and utterly shit, by the way.

Amusingly, Peter Bagge was known as the Grunge cartoonist, yet he HATES that shit! He prefers stuff like the Beach Boys and the Association!
You can fool all of the people all of the time, it would seem.

perhaps.
are you saying he only sung like that on totp though or that he always sings like that because he likes taking the piss? i no understand
postal postie Apr 7, 2004, 17:26 a lot of people say nirvana still sound fresh today. like you could listen to them fir the first time today and think they where a new band.
i say not likely. they sound dated to me. i product of their time. no bad thing but just not fresh.

And that typifies everything I dislike about the whole 'Nirvana' thing. The fact is that Nirvana were a very alternative band who had commercial success due to the over produced and poppy Nevermind.
Nevermind is by far the weakest Nirvana album - in its own essence it is just not Nirvana. In Utero is the best album followed by MTV Unplugged. Bleach captures them at there rawest sounding. Incesticide is also very good.
I also happen to like the 'Muddy Banks Of The Wishka' album. The production is awful, but to me thats part of the feel. Capturing the spirit of a band without using studio trickery.
However......
[immature comment]
Nirvana were never a patch on Pearl Jam. Ten and Vs alone completely blitz anything ever recorded by Nirvana.

*faints as he finally agrees with unordinarychild on a matter musical*
;)
Mr. Biscuit Apr 8, 2004, 19:34 I could never really get to like them, there always seemed to be something lacking in the soul department - me and Nirvvana never really clicked, although looking back on the era now they seem to have aged better than I thought they would and I don't mind them too much now, maybe it's the whole death thing going on - similar to the way Monroe, James Dean etc affect me more just because they're dead and I can project a tragedy onto what was essentially weak material, giving it more depth.
Or something.
Alex the Large Apr 13, 2004, 13:42 Nevermind was cleaned-up, watered-down Nirvana for the masses, and anyone who thinks it was their best album is a closet Elton John fan.
alpha_centauri Apr 18, 2004, 16:32 nirvana.......meh
a_ certain_ age Apr 20, 2004, 22:02 I don't think nirvana are overrated but kurt cobain definatly is. Don't get me wrong i love nirvana and i think kurt was cool as fuck but just because he killed himself doesn't make him great. I think that nevermind is a great pop album but i think that bleach is the best nirvana album.
Loose_end Apr 21, 2004, 02:31 "Hairy music is crap"
Nirvana were pretty crap
Pearl Jam cornered the market in crap hairy music however
Kurt Cobain was about as cool as my Aunt Mildred (she loved knitting)
Actually, if Kurt had stabbed himself to death with a knitting needle, that would have been cool :D
Nirvana verdict......one step up from Westlife
