seeing as it's the anniversary of Kurt Cobains death perhaps i should ask...

are nirvana one of the most overated bands of the last ten years? were their songs REALLY that great? does anyone NOT like the nevermind album (i am one - love bleach though)....

any opinions?

They didn't do anything The Pixies hadn't already done.

I thought they were class, and so was Cobain, but there is a ridiculous amount of hero-worship, idolism gone on since that day.

He was a bit of a junky fuck-up, a wee bit negative and not all that cheery, but a fantastic singer/songwriter.

Don't love the man, like the music.

I dont think they were/are particularly overated. They were decent enough and its more the impact they had that gets talked about rather than how good they were as a band.

i think that perhaps they were slightly, but it was definately NOT their fault.

The media just jumped on him and said he was going to be the next mega god, and he sort of was, but its impossible to live up to the sort of hype that surrounded nirvana.

I was never really that big of a Nirvana fan. They were important in thier way though and I can definatly see what the big deal about them was.

I always just thought Soundgarden were far more relative and intelligent.

Never did like them, and thought it was fucking stupid that MTV opened 'counselling' phone lines to console teenagers after Kurt killed himself...
I could've done with them when the Bangles broke up however...

i think they were overrated. sure they brought grunge music to the masses, but really, after the album bleach they went too poppy with their sound.

bleach is their best album.

Ive got Nevermind.........good album, my question is would he be as idolised if he hadnt done himself in?

The unplugged album is fucking class. But From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah has the fucking worst production since Joy Division's STILL album.

Nirvana, regardless of their own material, are easily the best covers band in the world.

To an extent yeah Nirvana are over-rated but only in the sense that today so many people do idolise them, wear the hoodies, believe they invented grunge etc, and often without having much knowledge of the band. I don't care how cliched it has become to like Nirvana because i really do, and i agree Bleach was their best album, nevermind is good, but in a different way, it doesnt sound like nirvana if that makes sense.

ps. don't get me started on bloody unplugged, gah. they never actually wanted to do it.

Everything else they recorded was truly terrible. Strange, that.
Crediting them with inventing a genre is ridiculous.
Grunge isn't even a proper genre.

Amusingly, Peter Bagge was known as the Grunge cartoonist, yet he HATES that shit! He prefers stuff like the Beach Boys and the Association!

a lot of people say nirvana still sound fresh today. like you could listen to them fir the first time today and think they where a new band.

i say not likely. they sound dated to me. i product of their time. no bad thing but just not fresh.

And that typifies everything I dislike about the whole 'Nirvana' thing. The fact is that Nirvana were a very alternative band who had commercial success due to the over produced and poppy Nevermind.
Nevermind is by far the weakest Nirvana album - in its own essence it is just not Nirvana. In Utero is the best album followed by MTV Unplugged. Bleach captures them at there rawest sounding. Incesticide is also very good.
I also happen to like the 'Muddy Banks Of The Wishka' album. The production is awful, but to me thats part of the feel. Capturing the spirit of a band without using studio trickery.

I could never really get to like them, there always seemed to be something lacking in the soul department - me and Nirvvana never really clicked, although looking back on the era now they seem to have aged better than I thought they would and I don't mind them too much now, maybe it's the whole death thing going on - similar to the way Monroe, James Dean etc affect me more just because they're dead and I can project a tragedy onto what was essentially weak material, giving it more depth.

Or something.

Nevermind was cleaned-up, watered-down Nirvana for the masses, and anyone who thinks it was their best album is a closet Elton John fan.

I don't think nirvana are overrated but kurt cobain definatly is. Don't get me wrong i love nirvana and i think kurt was cool as fuck but just because he killed himself doesn't make him great. I think that nevermind is a great pop album but i think that bleach is the best nirvana album.
