What happened to Tandy shops ?

They seem to have disappeared from the high streets, Anyone know what happened to them ?

Went bust.... must've been about 7 years ago now.

Shame, as they were extremely useful for a geek such as myself! I see the American version, Radio Shack, is still going strong over there. Maybe they should try here again, now that us Brits are a little nearer to the 21st Century :)

It's a shame, I still forget that they've shut down, everytime somebody asks me where to get solder, I say "Try tand.... shit!!"

Maybe their demise is the reason Maplin can't be bothered (see my Maplin thread). I agree it's a shame, as a fellow geek.

They were bought by Carphone Warehouse. Just what we need, more mobile phone shops.

Yeah... the two or three Tandy's I used to go into are Carphone Warehouses :\

Now that I think about it, oh yeah.

The guy what owns the Car Phone warehouse is richer than the Queen, he can afford to reopen Tandy!

I fucking hated that shop. The hi-fi equivalent of Netto...full of luckybag junk.

we still have tandy here... i think.

then again ive never really been into one. but i have noticed a sudden lack of tandy....

i loved tandy i used to get laods of second hand remote control cars there that jsut needed a little bit of repair for like 5 quid

I still have one of their old electronics tutorial kits lying around... the one where you had a board with loads of little springs poking out of it, and you used different lengths of wire to connect the springs (and therefore components) together and do all sorts of stuff. It did noise makers, radios etc.... pretty cool when I was 10.

The tandy in hastings became a Radio shack again after they closed down. I always used to prefer tandy they had a smaller and more professional feel, maplind are all about hard sell, even if you know what you came in for. One fo my collegues used to work there and ended up getting a verbal warning for not upselling on a ten grand sale!!

I remember way back in the 60's browsing through the Allied Radio catalogs (http://www.daveswebshop.com/alliedradio.shtml). Tandy was a catalog of leather cratft projects at the time.
