View Full Version : Ripoff bastard publicans
Sitting at the bar in my local last night. Nothing to read except the pricelist. Remember this is an ordinary estate pub in a town on the outskirts of London, not some West End shagfest.
Half a pint of cola or Lemonade costs £1.00. Its made from tapwater (free) infused with dirt cheap CO2, mixed with syrup which comes in 5-gallon containers. Maximum cost is about 10p. A healthy markup.
But the next item was the crippler - "Cordial or splash 50p"
So a half pint of lemonade and lime costs £1.50 which is 25p more than Guinness. Now it gets really good. Drink a vodka and coke and ask for as much coke as there is vodka in the glass. You pay 50p for 25cl of coke which is £20 a litre.
Newcastle Brown is £3.00, only £1.56 in Tescos. Budweiser is £2.60 at the bar and I've seen the bastard buying it by the caseload in Tescos for half that.
I understand about overheads, but this is a blatant ripoff. Can't vote with our feet. It's the only pub for miles. It's also the only pub where you'll hear, "Dad, Dad can I have a lemonade and lime?"
"Fuck off son. You'll have a Guinness and like it".
Blaggard Apr 11, 2004, 17:24 Yeah I know pubs like that. I think everyone does though. Theres a couple of really good local ones round here that charge reasonable prices and give you the mixer for free.
The local I go to round here is £1.80 a pint. Just outside of inner city Birmingham.
heh...mine is £1.43 for a pint of 4.9% wife beating crap
ad the social club down the road is £1.40 for the same pint
sam smiths and Ayinger rock :)
All that and Turf Moor and The Pentridge. Bliss
pyriel Apr 18, 2004, 18:48 Eh ?
Guiness £1.25 a pint
where the Fuck is this pub!
It's £2.80 a pint by me !
Works the other way as well. Newcastle brown is £1.79 in the local tesco, 1.60 at the local shitty nightclub (I usually get a case to take home at the end of the night)
pyriel Apr 18, 2004, 18:51 Oh, wait a minute
£1.25 for HALF a pint.
Should read these messages before replying (DOH!)
But if anyone knows where you can get guiness at £1.25 i'd be happy to move there :D
dukesy May 17, 2004, 12:36 OK...here we go
I LOVE beer..BUT sometimes I have to drive.
My local charges MORE for diet coke than it does for Stella !!!
Its a poor bloody show when you cant get NON alcoholic beer
well i was in a resturant on sat night and they wanted 57.00 quid for a bottle of jack daniels !!
and 19.00 for a bottle of wine ive seen in sainsbury's for 3.99
robbing bastards
Ugh_tC May 17, 2004, 19:59 This is the reason why I like Weatherspoons - staff are as thick as fuck, but you get fantastic prices.
Guiness is usally £1.80 a pint or so (depends on St. Paddy's day, whether its a Monday or there's a Y in the day.)
Also a pitcher of Vodka & Redbull is £7.50 ish. Grand stuff!
simeon May 25, 2004, 01:54 If pub prices are a rip-off, why am I a pub tenant that isn't rich? Simple answer is overheads.
I pay 15% of turnover as rent (classed as fair maarket rent). 10% goes on staff wages, and that isn't enough to have 1 member of staff working all the time! I have to pay over the odds for my beer because I'm tied to a brewery. I have no choice in this. I could buy cheaper out of tie, but I would run the risk of losing the pub for breach of teancy agreement.
I pay £1500 a year Business rates, but also have to pay Community Charge for the accomodation upstairs. £500 a year for a public entertainment licence, £600 a year Performing Rights Society Licence, £250 Phonographic Licence...the list goes on. We have to be competitive on prices as we are a student pub, with others close by(and they don't have all the money people seem to think they have), but the Government now want to stop price promostions in pubs! Fucking marvellous!
Why do I still do the job? 'cos I enjoy it.
Am I ripping the customer off? No.
Will you go to the pub for Euro 2004, but STILL moan about the prices? More than likely.
Ask your local pub manager how they arive at their prices, and you'll be amazed at how little 'ripping off' is actually going on.
Regards, Simeon
Kinky McFoxxy May 25, 2004, 08:48 Well, explain to me why one pub in town charges £2 for a vodka and coke while the pub across the road charges 99p? Both have the same type of entertainment, both do bar snacks, both are of a similar size, but the cheaper one also has a function room. So why the 101% difference?
simeon May 25, 2004, 10:11 The main difference is usually tenants versus manager.
As a tenant, I only have 1 pub to make my profit, but still have to buy my products from a Brewery Company at a set price. The same comapny also runs pubs, but 'gives' itself a much bigger barrelage discount, hence a lower price eg.
I get £25 a barrel discount from Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises(tenancy). My Dad worked for Scottish & Newcastle Retail(Managed Pub) and got £100 a barrel on exactly the same products. Thats a 26p difference just in the cost price. Pubs usually work on a 60% Gross Profit Margin, and to work out your selling price, you multilpy cost price by 3(actually 2.96, but can't do that in my head). Therefore, that 26p becomes a 78p difference in the price at the till. Now figure in that Companies like Wetherspoons are getting even bigger discounts than £100, and it soon becomes very difficult to come even close to their prices.
On a slightly different theme...The Government is now constantly harrasing Licencees for promoting/discounting alcohol irresponsibly. In Nottingham, there is even talk of a code of conduct being set up by the local council(for when they finally gain control of Licensing) whereby pubs are told the minimum amount they can charge for drinks.
Strange how the Government say we charging too little, but say we are charging too much.
Just a thought.
