I have finally saved up my pennies and treated myself to the probot album.
This is one awesome record a four year labour of love for the one and only Dave Grohl iloveyoudave
Eleven tracks with eleven different singers who all come from the 80's underground metal scene.
I defy any self proclaimed metal fan not to turn the volume up whithin the first minute of track one "Centuries of sin" with Cronos from Venom on vocals.
Next up is "Red war" with Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Soulfly fame on here we have Grohl at his best hard hitting and fast drumming and Max with his trade mark Brazillian growl. this track could easily have been roots by Sepultura its stunning.
Track three is "Shake your blood" with Lemmy if you watch any of the "alternative" music channels you will have seen this video. semi-naked goth girls and Lemmy in silver cowboy boots, a lot cooler than it sounds.
"Access babylon" has got the mega underrated Mike dean from corrosion of conformity on vocals, A minute twenty four of pure flat out hardcore. If you have never heard C.O.C track down "Animosity" Trust me its worth it.
"Silent spring" with Kurt Brecht of little known band D.R.I solid rhythm and throaty vocals this pales next to
"Ice cold man" with Lee Dorrian who sang for Cathederal and bellowed in thrash legends Napalm Death. Also has ex-soundgarden guitarist kim thayil adding weight to an already damn near perfect track 6
Easily my favorite track.
"The Emerald law" has wino who is probably best remembered from THE OBSESSED the god fathers of the d.c sludge scene. the things I would do to be able to drum like this song are not really mentionable.
Celtic frost, for me were always that step too far, spiked shoulder pads for fucks sake only GWAR could pull that off.
But Tom G Warrior (or Tom Gabriel Fisher if you will) is a legend in his own right and a fucking monster off a man so Im not telling him."BIg Sky" is possibly the weakest song on the album, but still rocks like a bastard.
Voivod are another band who were "out there" but "Dictatosarus" is a very pleasant surprise.
The one song that grabbed me on first listen was "My tortured soul" really reminds me of very early Soundgarden Eric Wagner of Trouble really should get more thanks I feel from the grunge scene.
Finally we have the living proof that face paint and beards really dont go. King Diamond, laughing quite sinisterly on "Sweet dreams" as had some very big doubts about this one but as with "big Sky" it still is a heavy ass song.
there is a hidden track that is about Wrlocks fucking with your mind, or something along those lines.
I may well be biased but anybody who has any interest in rock/metal needs this album, its is simply the best heavy metal album fo a very, very long time.
And Dave grohl plays at least 80% of the instruments ;)
