View Full Version : The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
RonnieJoice Apr 20, 2004, 22:47 I "aquired" this album, and was overly dissapointed. The beats were 7/10, the lyrics strayed from 6/10 to 8/10 - and although some of the content had potential, I found the experience of the album (listened to it twice over) wasn't half as enriching as the original debut, Original Pirate Material.
Infact, their new single 'Fit But U Know It' was the best song on the album in my opinion.
Anyone else heard this dissapointment, I mean, album?
Alex the Large Apr 20, 2004, 22:50 Nope, but I know it took me quite a few months to get into Original Pirate Material. I didn't find Skinner's style particularly accessible. It'll be interesting to hear the new album.
STOOPS Apr 21, 2004, 08:22 Not a huge fan of Skinner but there is something about his style can't put my finger on it though.
ywouldi Apr 24, 2004, 23:30 Thanks to a certain member here I too have also "aquired" this album,
Love it, and it now annoys me even more when people say the Streets are just talking crap. The album is intelligent and often moving.
Very different to OPM though, but in a good way.

I loved OPM, and was worried I wouldnt be able to love A Grand in the same way.
It has taken a few plays but there are some pure classics in there. Dry your eyes for one,
I think the first few listens it is important to listen to the tracks in order, it does make more sense that way and links things in a way which wouldnt be possible if you didnt have them in that order.
Binded by the light aswell seems to strike a chord with me. On the back of this album I have brought tickets to see him live, and will be down at HMV on May 10th to get me a shiny new copy of the album.
thesmileyone Apr 28, 2004, 11:00 I think he is a cock. My mates into hip-hop hate his guts, and my brother reckons he is the new Chas n Dave.
UnoChild Apr 28, 2004, 12:35 A Grand Don't Come For Free is fantastic. I was lucky enough to *ahem* acquire this album - of which i am very grateful (thank you).
I love it. I think what makes it so good, is that it is completely different from OPM. They could have so easily done a remake of the first album (which is what i expected).
So basically, within the space of a few months, I've gone from hating this group with a passion, to the albums being high up on my most recently played playlists.

Thing is he isnt hip hop, he isnt indie, he isnt pop. He just is.
Although Chas and Dave, well, they were dead popular in their time.

Ok...Strap me down....
Did I miss a meeting or summat >???
I HONESTLY thought after the first 1-2 tracks that I heard that it was all a pisstake gone wrong
Is the idiot serious ? Is he REALLY selling albums of Nonsense to gullible freaks who want to listen to what is basically a brummie with a mockney accent telling us all to "keep it real " and "push things forward". Fuck Off
Shouldn't he be busy Kev'ing up his XR2 or summat ? Tosser
:moo:
Mikey G May 7, 2004, 16:04 I've read 5-6 reviews of the album, from Q to The Guardian and all give it 5/5. I haven't seen such consistent high praise for an album for ages.
Anyone else heard it?
My best mate has listened, and she loves it too. well I got a text this morning at about 1am saying she couldnt get enough of it.

It doesn't surprise me that they are going on about how good it is. Q has become style of substance in recent years - they seem to be going down the NME route of musical snobbery. The Guardian described Eminem as a poet so I really don't think their opinion is valid.
Fine if you want to listen to that stuff, but it really doesn't interest me. Obviously it must have something going for it to sell that many copies.
Probably to ruin the gig I am going to I heard a live set today of The Streets, and it seems fabby :)
stoke_fields May 10, 2004, 20:16 The first album is clearly a work of contemporary genius. Skinner is a man with a lyrical subtlety and wit rarely seen in music of his genre and... it's just so damn clever at times. To dismiss it as anything less is clearly to miss something.
But then I heard 'Fit But U Know It' the other day and it's... just... not. In fact I really don't like it at all. And I'm more than a little sceptical of good reviews of the album when this song is picked out as a prominent feature. Still... no doubt it will be in my local library at some point.
I wouldnt personally say Fit but you know it is a high point from the album.
I love Dry your eyes, and Blinded by the lights is something special too.
ywouldi May 10, 2004, 23:10 I agree with Salsa, Fit But You Know It is probably the only "Single" on the album, the rest are a little too tied in with the story of the album. There are much better, more meaningful tracks but they wont be commercially succesful.
On a side note, I hate hearing people automatically dismiss The Streets as shit because it doesnt fit into their typical music taste of "Im sooooo depressed, the world is against me, my mum wont let me do X" music.

Alex the Large May 11, 2004, 18:41 Well, on the strength of the single I was expecting it to be shit, too. But blow me down if it ain't BETTER than OPM. It's certainly far more instant. And it's every bit as annoyingly catchy. There's some great numbers on there. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best album I've heard all year. So far.
UnoChild May 11, 2004, 19:41 Well, it seems I agree with Mr Large on everything musical bar the libertines. :D
I also think A Grand Dont Come For Free is the album of the year so far....

Don't worry, you'll come round in the end. After all, you liked For Lovers. It's only a matter of time before you buy a guardsman's tunic, get yerself a full-blown crack habit, and loudly declare Up The Bracket the best debut album of the last ten years. Oh yeah.
As for The Streets, even Fit But You Know It sounds brilliant in the wider perspective of the album.
Funniest lyric? Tough one, but I'd say it goes to "Finally my time comes/I press the fifty squid button...insufficient funds."
Although the bit when he thinks he's lost his phone and wails "Awww, this is a crock of SHIT" gives it a run for its money.
I'm LOVING this record today.
UnoChild May 11, 2004, 19:53 Dry your eyes is my personal favourite - although i do love pretty much every song on the album..
Alex the Large May 11, 2004, 19:55 Empty Cans is awesome. Listening to it whilst "relaxing" late last night, the bit where it 'rewinds' and starts again really threw me. I was like "Durrrrr, what the fuck's going on...haven't we just heard this one?" Etc.
