View Full Version : do your pets know names?
AnthillMob Apr 23, 2004, 18:29 not their names but if you were to say a name of a person they knew do they go bonkers?
my dog, if you say dan, nanny, zoe, cliff, bert, gladys, darren, jamie then he goes bonkers and runs round barking and looking at the door because he expects them to come in.
just tested him and if i say "mum" he pays no attention but if i say "nanny" he goes mad.
(he knows my mum as nanny, his nanny....thats sad in its own right)
Gattara Apr 23, 2004, 19:58 Ah, bless him!
butchspangly Apr 23, 2004, 20:14 Hey Mrs mob, not heard from you in a while!
Yep, Murphy (the eldest) knows most the family names but Lotty, the runt, is a bit thick!
going off topic, Murphy has had a lump appear on the side of his head and is off to the vets next week to have it removed
:\
magicguppy Apr 23, 2004, 20:21 Oscar, my cat knows his own name, and no-one elses.
Typical cat really.

i read somewhere that animals respond to tone of voice rather than actuall names but im sure my dog responds to various names
beautiful pooch spangly
Kinky McFoxxy Apr 23, 2004, 20:27 Awwwwwwwwwww... the cute kitty!
My neighbour's cat, Beano, does not respond to 'go away' or 'get out my house' but he does respond to 'fuck off'. And there was a programme on about fishing today, and I turned round to see my fish, apparently staring at the TV, with a look of utter shock and horror on his little fishy face...
Alex the Large Apr 23, 2004, 20:36 Magic, your cat's gorgeous! He looks like he's just had his coat cleaned by the vet - they come out all fluffy and soft afterwards!
AnthillMob Apr 23, 2004, 20:43 cute animal pics!
hope murphy is alright.
joey our cockatoo is also a nosey bastard and is more of a lookout than the dog and know my mums and my cousins car and will start barking (he impersonates the dog) as soon as he spots their car.
joey also knows when someone is about to leave if they are here even before they get up and will start saying "goodbye" and waving to them.
psychic animals are class but scary at times.
My dogs only respond to 'CARROT!!!'
They don't even know the word 'walkies' as we've never had to tell them we're going out. Just putting the 'walkies' shoes on lets them know.
They know 'dad' but not where... or who... if we say the word they rush to the door because we usually say it when he comes home. If he's stood in front of them and we say 'dad' they still run to the door...
stupid buggers.
Alex the Large Apr 23, 2004, 23:14 Well, yeah - you've got to allow for the fact that dogs are one of the dumbest animals on Earth.
thesmileyone Apr 23, 2004, 23:51 no, my mum's cat is dumber than any dog i have ever encountered. but he is also a sadistic fat fucker.

Heh, he spends a fair portion of the day grooming, I always marvel at his Daz white patches, considering what he gets up to!
Once I find my usb cable, I'll show you what cute kitty does when he's on video....
Huddy knows all the kids names but in particular my youngest sons name. For some reason as soon as he comes in the dog will go for his ears licking them etc .
Mariska Apr 24, 2004, 00:15 My cats and dog all know their names and our names. The cats know what day of the week it is, for example I always go out on Tuesday and Friday mornings and they try to get themselves into an inaccessible spot so I can't put them outside. The rest of the week they just lie on the couch or on the bed as they know I won't disturb them.
If I yell at the cat for stratching the furniture the dog goes over and sorts him out.
NaughtyKitten Apr 24, 2004, 00:23 Our dog Fraser knows that my partner is coming home about 20 minutes before he gets there. He sits at the door whining. I'm not sure if he picks vibes up from me, or whether he truly is psychic, but its pretty cool anyway.
He knows words like dinner, toy and walkies, and if you say 'where's Dad' he gets excited, but I'm sure its just the tone of voice that does it.
My favourite stupid dog thing he does is watch TV. He especially loves football. :D
Animals tend to live by routines and if you do something at the same time every day and someone comes home around 15-20 mins later the pet will clock what you did and think 'jings dad comes home after she does that'. Plus they can figure different lighting, hear lots of cars coming home, that programme on the tv that comes on same time every day... lots of things build up associations in a pet's body clock and it learns to remember what happens next.
AnthillMob Apr 24, 2004, 09:55 yeah cain knows when mr mob is due home long before he pulls intop our road.
