View Full Version : Album artwork
I think a good photo is what you want for an album. Clash-London Calling for example. I love all the Pixies stuff, Doolittle especially. In fact all 4AD artwork is exemplary.
What other album covers do you think stand on their own as great art?
Alex the Large Apr 29, 2004, 19:27 Sex Pistols' Nevermind the Bollocks is legendary (for good reasons), and The Smiths' Meat Is Murder has become quite iconic. The cover of the Baader-Meinhof album is hilarious.
Lintuk Apr 29, 2004, 19:57 NOFX - Heavy petting zoo always makes me giggle.
RATM - S/t just works so well with the cd.
comababy Apr 29, 2004, 21:09 Peter Saville did some excellent work with New Order - Brotherhood and Republic perhaps being the high watermark.
Which was the one with Stephen Morris on the front with the tracing paper?
Bungeeboy Apr 29, 2004, 22:32 Stone Roses - Stone Roses is great
comababy Apr 29, 2004, 22:40 Tweez - it was Low-Life. You could take the Morris photo out and put the three other band member shots in. Hours of fun, perhaps.
Troublegum by Therapy is ace. The cover is a naked man smeared in mud poking his head into a dustbin.* When you open the cd, the disc looks like a bin lid. You take it out, and you have the point of view of the guy on the cover: A nice picture of bloody rags, used needles, condoms, dodgy porn and a dead rat. :D
* Garbage pail, for our cousins across the pond.
The cover of Six by Mansun refers to all the inspirations behind the album, and is a jolly nice painting in its own right. ;)
World Of Weird Apr 30, 2004, 14:12 Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company (R.Crumb)

No, I wasn't old enough to masturbate in 1985, but I've made up for it since.

One I've actually got! Ever seen Tantamount To Treason - Michael Nesmith and The Second National Band? It even comes with a recipe for home brew on the back.
Royster May 4, 2004, 12:26 The "Set Fire To Flames" artwork is usually bleak as hell, which is always a good thing :)
I agree with Stoke Fields about Godspeed artwork, some really original stuff, the same with Fly Pan Am, and A Silver Mt Zion...hell all the artists on the Constellation label have great artwork.
TEAM EDNA May 4, 2004, 12:31 I liked the pure by three colours red album cover so much I had it tattooed on my arm. :D

For those that haven't seen it, the sleeve is covered with text explaining how the record company is trying to subvert you into buying the album.
