Being a bit sceptical about bands that the media hype up I avoided The White Stripes until last summer when I got Elephant and White Blood Cells.

I think they are incredible: exciting, original, tuneful, funny. The best band of the last 10 years.

Apart from the comment referring to them as the best band of the last 10 years (the coral have that title IMO) I pretty much agree with all that.

DeStijl is the best album. Lo-fi blues type stuff. I highly recommend.

You may also like The Soledad Brothers. these guys helped young Jack out in his early days.
Similar sound but a bit more bluesy.

Not very good.
That bird on the drums looks like a Manga cartoon.

basically, they sound like bands from 20 yrs ago, which invariably means that they are hailed as "original". i think they're overrated, but i'm basing this on their singles.

I take rather a similar position based on similar evidence, though I have heard most of Elephant. I'm generally opposed to the "older is better" approach they seem to take. I just don't find them very interesting.

Jack was quite average in Cold Mountain though. \o/

They're using a lot of older things.
They're not that good.

I don't remember any bands being like The White Stripes in 1984. All I remember is Duran Duran, Van Halen and 5 Star.

Jack White is influenced by the artists that influenced the artists of 20/30 years ago. He's gone back to the roots of blues...

I don't think the White Stripes are a bad band, but the Strokes are far more limited. Their first album was good, because of its simplicity but its just more of the same.

The whole thing about the White Stripes playing the blues strikes me as odd - technically they are not as good as the old blues players.

Err... have you heard Jack White go for it on the guitar? He is far better than he lets on....

Technically compared to the likes of stevie ray vaughn the no he isnt as good.
BUT for a duo they fucking rock and black mass is my fav song for pissing off football yobs in the pub, after hours of three cunting lions and oasis it sounds like a battle cry :D

To be fair, compared to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Joe Satriani... no one is good.

What I meant is that White is more inspired by blues artists of old such as Robert Johnson and the like. It's all about the feel - fuck technicalities.

overrated - meg can't drum for toffee (splash, splash splash those cymbals, ) and jacks an ok guitarist, but struggles live. they make some nice noise but i can only listen to them for about 10 minutes before getting bored.
saw pj harvey play at eden last year and HER take on blues guitar is far better than his - she is shockingly good!

Just going by what gets played on Rage (the only video show not aimed exclusively at 12 year olds) I am not impressed. It often happens though that the singles are the worst crap on the album but I'm not prepared to shell out $30 to find out.
