View Full Version : Player Of The Tournament ?
Royster Jun 9, 2004, 09:43 Obviously we can never be sure, as players can have off days (or tournaments) and just not perform regardless of their talents, but we can always have a guess.
So who do you think will be the best player...or at least cause a stir in Euro 2004
In my opinion, i think Steven Gerrard could indeed make a world wide name for himself, as could Micheal Ballack for Germany and Tomas Rosicky for the Czech Republic.
Cause theres also the obvious ones like Henry, Zindane, Figo, Raul, Joaquin, Oliver Kahn etc etc
Anyway who do you think?
UnoChild Jun 9, 2004, 10:27 I can't see beyond Steven Gerrard at the moment. So much promise and he never fails to deliver when it matters. He is going to become one of the worlds best, which as a Liverpool fan is both exciting and worrying. How long can Liverpool expect to keep him happy if they continue underachieving?
Flip Flopper Jun 9, 2004, 10:38 Zidane or Henry or Gerard.
I'm hedging my bets.
Eertamai Jun 9, 2004, 10:47 I'm hoping it is Zidane, because when he is on top of his game there is no one that I would rather watch play. Big tournaments need the big players to be on form. Gerrard's coming into it after a brilliant season so hopefully on the big stage he can really take effect, the same with Totti and Morientes.
As for the slightly less known players in the world, maybe someone like Milan Baros, Wesley Schneider, or Simone Perrotta will come to the fore.
Royster Jun 9, 2004, 11:14 i like you lot hope Zinedine Zidane ends up best player of the tournament (obviously he has a slow start against England) as he is my favorite player thus far in my short life and i think theres no one who can touch him.
magicguppy Jun 9, 2004, 11:18 If England do well, it could be Michael Owen.
Does Davor Suker (Croatia) still play? He was superb in '98.
10 Pence Short Jun 9, 2004, 11:49 I'm sure it'll be Carol Poborsky, let's just hope UTD don't buy him again...
Royster Jun 9, 2004, 12:03 Does Davor Suker (Croatia) still play? He was superb in '98.
Nah infortunately Davor Suker finished playing i think 2 seasons ago.
But what a great striker he was.
Player of the tournament must surely be the Portugese reserve goalkeeper, Quim.
Just to see it on the trophy...
Wee Dougie Jun 9, 2004, 12:31 Well, certain "experts" such as Mark Lawrenson seem to be already tipping Wayne Rooney as player of the tournament, so it's probably best if the rest don't even bother.
TRIKSHOT29 Jun 9, 2004, 15:11 Player of the tournament must surely be the Portugese reserve goalkeeper, Quim.

Do you think Quim's any good in slippery conditions? :))
Guessing it will be Henry, Raul or Zidane
Can see Lampard and Gerrard being stand out performers in the England team.
Mikey G Jun 9, 2004, 15:42 Zidane isn't the player he was 2 years ago. I'm willing to bet he disappoints.
I reckon Raul, Morientes (if he get's a game), Ballak and Gerrard.
hugo-a-gogo Jun 9, 2004, 15:47 I hope Quim has a great tournament, saving lots of goals
I'd love to see balls banging off Quim for the next 3 weeks
then Quim would be on everyone's lips
Mikey G Jun 9, 2004, 15:49 I hope Kuntz is still in the German squad. `And Kuntz has only Quim to beat?'
butchspangly Jun 9, 2004, 16:14 I`d go for Seaman over Quim anyday :D
I have a feeling in my water that Rooney is going to be a bit of a crowd pleaser, even if Lawrenson has already said it! He simply shows no fear of anyone.
Flip Flopper Jun 9, 2004, 16:59 "And Seaman was all over Kuntz there.."
hugo-a-gogo Jun 9, 2004, 17:08 I've re-upped my profile pic of me in my Kuntz shirt
GreebStreebling Jun 9, 2004, 20:22 Every two years a new tournament, every two years a new silly-name to play with
(Shame Norway didn't qualify - "There's only inches seperating Arce and Quim")
I think predicting Zidane or Raul will have a good tournament is cheating a bit.
staysinvegas Jun 10, 2004, 00:19 If only to be a contrarian, i'm going with Rui Costa or Christian Vieiri
hugo-a-gogo Jun 10, 2004, 09:44 Arce is Paraguayan isn't he?
Madd_un Jun 10, 2004, 09:58 It would be fantastic to see Gerrard win it (as England take the cup) but Robben for Holland is a fantastic prospect who could set the world alight!
I don't understand why Cisse isn't playing for France, he was the French leagues highest goal scorer this term and he's brimming with potential! (can't wait till he joins the Reds!)
Eertamai Jun 10, 2004, 10:14 I don't understand why Cisse isn't playing for France, he was the French leagues highest goal scorer this term and he's brimming with potential! (can't wait till he joins the Reds!)
Cisse is serving a 4 game ban for getting sent off for the U21s, so if he had been selected in the squad, he would only have been available for the semi-final onwards if France got there.
Madd_un Jun 10, 2004, 10:29 bugger!
(this minimum 10 charachters thing is pissing me off now!)
If it's for the most goals I suppose it must be Nistelroy or some German (why do they still bother with names for German footballers?).
I hope to see Viera scowl his way to the trophy, or Totti win it.
Amanda Huggenkiss Jun 10, 2004, 11:39 Sstttttteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvooooooo
for me. 100% every game, as long as he's not played out of position.
Madd_un Jun 10, 2004, 11:57 well said crunt!
Stevie Gerrard for Prime Minister.............of the world
GreebStreebling Jun 10, 2004, 16:42 Arce is Paraguayan isn't he?
Your probably right. There was a Norwegian with a name that I]meant[/I] arse though. Can't remember what it was.
On topic:
Figo's talking about this being his international swansong and if I was a romantic I'd say he'll be player of the tournament.
I'm a romantic so I'll say he'll be player of the tournament.
Mr Fall Jun 10, 2004, 22:54 Figo's in a strop because Deco's in the squad who was born in Brazil. Saying that however I think Figo will be fantastic.
staysinvegas Jun 10, 2004, 22:57 Figo WILL be fantastic. I won't hear a word said against him.
(see my "soon i will see him again" thread in Everything forum).
My money is on Vieri, Del Piero, Totti (of course), but what do you guys think about Raul's chances? Is he handicapped by the rest of the squad?
Flip Gubbins Jun 10, 2004, 23:02 I think they might give it to Kahn as a sort of tribute.
Ken_doll Jun 11, 2004, 11:34 I think Steven Gerrrard is a great player and will do well, but don't see him running with the glory though. I think Pavel Nedved (if the Czech's go far enough) or Zinedine Zidane would be my best guess
butchspangly Jun 21, 2004, 21:08 I have a feeling in my water that Rooney is going to be a bit of a crowd pleaser, even if Lawrenson has already said it! He simply shows no fear of anyone.
Rooooooooooooney!
AnthillMob Jun 21, 2004, 21:10 my bird ularu who we call roo is now called roo afgter rooney and not ularu who is a naughty boy.
if you make sense of that a virtual tenner to the first person who does.
marleyb Jun 21, 2004, 22:06 rooney
only before euro 2004 started i wouldnt have said that .
hes been a great suprise to me....
Eertamai Jun 22, 2004, 08:26 Rooney has so far justified all the hype in England before this tournament. I didn't expect him to, but he is actually showing in games all the touches and passing that pundits were going on about. I'm a bit surprised to but let's just hope he can keep on going.
I was hoping Zidane would be one of the stars and so far he hasn't dissapointed. He has dragged France out of defeat against England by practically controlling the whole game, scoring the free kick and the penalty after being sick on the pitch as he was standing waiting to take the penalty, and then retaining form in spite of his teams lack of purpose and individual errors.
Mikey G Jun 22, 2004, 09:29 So far it's Rooney, Nedved and Zidane. Figo looks past his best and the Italians, Dutch and Germans haven't delivered (yet).
UnoChild Jun 22, 2004, 09:39 I'd pretty much agree with that.
