View Full Version : storyline or frag fest
postal postie Jun 10, 2004, 18:16 what sort of fps games do you like.
story driven games which pull you into the action (mafia/deus ex2 halflife)
or games that just require you to shoot things (doom, unreal, serious sam, painkiller
oh yeah. and why
safeasfuck Jun 11, 2004, 19:40 depends if you're playing single player or multiplayer
games like halflife & far cry are good as single player games because they require some thought & the storyline gives the game some depth, rather than just running around shooting everything there's some element of thought & planning required
i'm currently about 2/3 through far cry and can definitely recommend it (especially if like so many others you are still awaiting the long-delayed halflife 2)
multiplayer - much prefer just shooting things.
as far as i'm concerned if i'm looking for a multiplayer game there's still nothing wrong with good old Quake 3 arena.
I've tried some of the co-op multiplayer games such as counterstrike etc but there are always those on your team who take it way too serious, hence preferring games where there's no planning involved, just shooting whatever moves before it shoots you
just my 2p
Mr. Biscuit Jun 12, 2004, 10:58 Far Cry is a fantastic game - I was initially disappointed in it as I had to turn quite a few of the graphics options down to run the beast smoothly (it's WELL a system hog), but it still looks pretty spectacular - and when you see the first sign that things aren't particularly 'ordinary' on this island, you become gripped - and I suppose in a way it is similar to HL, but for some reason the contrast between the gorgeous tropical scenery (and oh boy is it lush - the first couple of times I played it was spent just swimming around between islands and getting a tan; gorgeous), and claustrophobic corridors is even greater, and I have experienced more than my fair share of pants-filling moments.
postal postie Jun 12, 2004, 15:14 i can't stand games like unreal. or even the original doom for that matter. just didn't seem to have a cohesive story line to pull you along.
halflife was brilliant though.
i may get far cry soon. although both doom3 and halflife 2 are ment to be out this summer. looks like i won't be getting any sun this year.
stoke_fields Jun 13, 2004, 13:48 I'm very much hoping Doom 3 will stay true to its roots and not try to be a new Half-life or something like that. I feel it was the utter lack of any sensible story and the total focus on ultraviolence that made the origionals what they were. Oh and that they were scary as hell.
postal postie Jun 13, 2004, 15:39 the only thing i didn't like about doom was that all the locations looked alike. i got a headache trying to find where i was. and then i realize i've got to wall crawl along every single wall attempting to push them for the secret area to advance. bollocks. it was like a maze. the lack of true story wasn't really a problem. doom 3 with it's new graphics will hopefully sort this out.
stoke_fields Jun 13, 2004, 19:59 I take it you never played Wolfenstein then.
dominoid Jun 14, 2004, 16:49 For me it depends on what kind of mood I'm in. If I'm in a thinking mood then something like half life will appeal more but if I just want to vent some anger then I'll play something like doom.
And if I can't sleep I'll play metroid prime ;-)
postal postie Jun 14, 2004, 17:16 oh i've played wolfenstein yeah.
Jedichef Jun 14, 2004, 18:26 what one? wofenstein? or return to castle wolfenstein?
stoke_fields Jun 14, 2004, 20:46 The one with the constantly repeating blue walls.
Jedichef Jun 14, 2004, 23:43 i was talking to postal.
postal postie Jun 15, 2004, 17:12 i played the old one. wolfenstein 3d i think, and the latest one.
postal postie Jun 15, 2004, 17:13 those golden days when your character couldn't look up. and i don't think they could jump either.
i likes the story driven ones with the occasional blood bath to keep things interesting.
Whatever happened to Hired Guns2?
stoke_fields Jun 15, 2004, 22:32 I like to slaughter batches of specially reared mice during play to simulate the joy of the kill.
i was talking to postal.
Good for you, son. I decided to give a response of my own. Kay?
harry007jnr Jun 15, 2004, 23:37 Whatever happened to Hired Guns2?
Been canned. Shame, Hired Guns rocked.
Banana anyone?
dominoid Jun 16, 2004, 16:10 i was talking to postal.
Ooh, that's a point, I'd forgotton about postal. That was cool.
aargh, please. let me die
Jedichef Jun 16, 2004, 22:47 postal 2, the share the pain edition, was a great laugh :)
As i mentioned in a thread not so long ago im a nintendo worshipper.
*genuflects*
I prefer roleplay stuff, like ***ZELDA***. (genuflects) and such games,
aparently females are more responsive to games like ***ZELDA*** (genuflects)
I never got into stuff like doom, my brothers used to play it when i was a wee thing and told me the characters would come and kill me in my sleep, etc.
hmm i like story games like morrowwind and deux ex but some times I have not the brain power to stick with it and jusrt wanna shoot and blow things to peices....it depends what frame of mind i am in .

hmmm. i don't mind role play games either. as long as they have guns of some sort in them. never liked zelda though. system shock 2. now that's a game.
some times i too like to just blow things up but it gets boring within 10 mins. i have to have a reason for blowing things up.
what's my motivation i say whats my motivation???
stoke_fields Jun 17, 2004, 19:32 New 3D Zelda games feel far more like puzzle solving games to me than RPGs. For true role playing action look no further than most of the titles Square (or SquareEnix these days) churn out.
dominoid Jun 17, 2004, 22:36 I agree to a point, Zelda games aren't pure RPGs like Fnial Fantasy or breath of fire but they are good fun and I've fallen in love with the newly revealed one already. Not sure about Crystal Chronicles though, really not getting into it but I don;t wanna byu a ps3 for the sake of about five games.
stoke_fields Jun 17, 2004, 22:38 Heh, I bought mine for Final Fantasy X alone. But I am a nutcase.
but you have to admit that zelda revolutionized the RPG.
personally, Majoras mask was a crapload of recycled wank.
But all the others i loved... even the 8 bit dodge-brothers origional.
As for final fantasy and co...
I dont like playstations, as i mentioned in the same thread. the loding time shits me, and the people (up until recently) looked like clusters of polygons.
However i entered an amature karaoke contest last year and am now the regional champion, 1st prize a ps2. I use it... but i still dont like them...
Resident evil 2 is about as dedicated as i got...
harry007jnr Jun 18, 2004, 06:25 but you have to admit that zelda revolutionized the RPG.
Zelda revolutionary? :))
You ever hear of Ultima? You must have heard of Rogue though, right? Can you say Nethack?
Sheesh, kids today! :P

Then get the originals on the NES and SNES.
postal postie Jun 18, 2004, 17:26 ultima. i used to play that. brilliant game. even used to come with a map on a tea towel of the world your playing in. games don't have them any more. aaaaaah the good ol days.

FF did start out on the NES though. And as for loading times they are the fault of people who can't program properly, not the console. Just take FF-X, or Metal Gear Solid or even GTA (although I acknowledge there is an initial load though no major subsiquent ones). Though I do conceed load times were a major issue on the PSOne.
Then get the originals on the NES and SNES.
ive got them haha.
im just to devout.... :(
