View Full Version : France - the slide.
Dazzla Jun 18, 2004, 08:54 Right, it's about time people stopped tipping France as favourites. Let's look at the facts:
France have scored only once in open play so far this tournament.
They needed a penalty and an own goal to beat Croatia.
They didn't win the game against England - we lost it.
They were fucking shit in the last World Cup.
Yeah, they'll win the group (one in which England were tipped as their only real competition)
They'll probably get into the semis, considering the poor quality opposition that looks likely in the quarters.
I can't see them winning it, though, or even getting to the final if they're seriously tested on the way.
If it wasn't for Henry and Zidane, I don't think they'd have got this far.
Eertamai Jun 18, 2004, 08:59 They have looked well below what they are capable of, it's just that they have so many players who if they play to their full ability, will blow anyone else away. We'll have to see if they up their game, but I haven't seen another team that is better so far in the tournament.
neildeal Jun 18, 2004, 09:02 what about Sweden?
Eertamai Jun 18, 2004, 09:08 Sweden had a good performance but it was hardly a typical Swedish performance. Answer me this, if Sweden played France and both teams played to their full ability who would win?
At the moment a lot of teams will realistically be thinking that they can win it, but the point is, that if France get it together then they will beat everyone.
Royster Jun 18, 2004, 09:35 France are looking very suspect at the moment and certainly dont look like possible Tournament winners.
The only players who have consistantly performed over the first two games is Vieira and Zidane, the others have bee poor to say the least. They really have only had 45 minutes of good fottball and that was the first half against the Croatians.
Its obvious though why they are still tipped as favorites as they have the best team, and if they eventually click they will indeed beat everyone.
UnoChild Jun 18, 2004, 10:33 The thing is with France, even though they haven't clicked as yet, you still feel that at some point they will, and completely annihilate the opposition. England did well against them, Croatia plated well in the second half.
If France don't really turn it on against the Swiss, I'm not sure they will... even though i'm predicting a big win for them in that match. However, they (like all the best teams) have a habit of getting results without moving out of 1st or 2nd gear.. a habit that England need to learn..
I still think France will get to the final. Granted, at some point they really will be tested, by a team much stronger than Croatia.. but they have the talent and the spirit to turn it on when it really matters.
Madd_un Jun 18, 2004, 11:12 France, like Italy, have looked poor but remember they can turn it on at any time. France will beat the Swiss and they'll probably not deserve it, but that's France! I think it would be fantastic if the Swiss beat them but, being serious, it's not going to happen!
neildeal Jun 18, 2004, 14:44 god did anyone check out Zidane's brilliant flick on towards the goal last night??
It's gone pretty much un noticed in the commentry. Was i dreaming??
UnoChild Jun 18, 2004, 14:46 What channel were you watching it on? On BBC1 they were wanking over it!
Zidane is a fucking genius. Such sublime skill and eliquence. He makes the game beautiful.
neildeal Jun 18, 2004, 15:05 just needs the rest of his team to pull their fingers out!
