Now that England are out, I've been thinking about who has performed well and done themselves justice in Portugal with their dispalys. The big tournaments are what it is all about if players want to be considered world class. It's no good playing well for your club in the league against mediocre/decent players, it matters to play well when the pressure is on, and it really matters.

The Star: Rooney. Did better than I expected and should be satisfied he did all he was supposed to, and more.

Did Themselves Justice: Campbell (superb), G.Neville, A.Cole, Lampard, Vassell, Terry.

Lacking: Owen, Gerrard, Beckham, James, Scholes.

Before the tournment I would have said that Owen, Gerrard and Beckham were England's most important players, but I feel they just didn't perform as expected.

Pretty fair summation I reckon.

I would say Campbell was also a star. Terry did himself justice, so did Scholes.

Cole & Neville did themselves justice only cos expectations were low, Beckham and Gerrard didn't live up to the hype. Owen did OK.

I'd also suggest that Vassell did himself justice as an extremely limited player, and Heskey lived down to expectations.

O! for an attacking player who could hold the ball up (Smiff? Shearer (I'm joking)).

What about Ledley King? Did superb against France and did a good job when he came on as a substitute against Croatia. He did much better than was expected of him

Was in Essex urging his wife to push when he should have been on instead of at least one Neville. FFS he can have hundreds of kids but this frivolity ensures he would never be selected again by Big Phil. Trust me.

As much as the devious little shit riles me I have to say Vassel and Heskey were conclusive proof Defoe shouldve been on the plane.
