View Full Version : Doom III
Markela_F12 Jul 19, 2004, 22:17 Must say I'm looking forward to the release of this. The daddy of all FPS games returns with a vengeance.
And yes, I know Wolfenstein 3D was out before Doom, so no nitpickers
netniV Jul 19, 2004, 22:32 could you please upgrade my machine so I can play this ? k thx.
stoke_fields Jul 19, 2004, 22:48 My PC clearly wins when it comes to games released next month.
netniV Jul 19, 2004, 22:51 bah humbug!
stoke_fields Jul 20, 2004, 00:27 I'll have to run a stress test with HL2, Doom 3 and Stalker all running simultaneously and get back to you.
:)
Ronin Da Bomb Jul 20, 2004, 00:37 Im More Eager To Play Half-life 2 (Litterally Pissing Myself)
Goat Rider Aug 2, 2004, 07:24 Well its been *cough* released on the new to download *cough* Got it installed and had a run round of it and its alright, not had much time with it been a little busy, but I do know one thing I will be buying it once its released over here.
Performance wise it runs smoother then what you would expect. I've installed it on the 2 machines at my house and it runs very well on both.
Machine 1 - Brand spanking new doom3 the first game installed on it
AthlonXP 64 3400
512mb PC3200 DDR Ram
Radeon x800 Pro
Machine 2 - Server/Storage PC/If the lads are round play on the internet/network games.
AthlonXP 3200
512 Mb pc3200 ddr ram
Radeon 9700 Pro
And had no issues with either system running it so far anyway
Cloudane Aug 2, 2004, 11:32 I've been sooo tempted to.. y'know.. but I think the experience will be better buying it on the day of release :)
PooperScooper Aug 2, 2004, 19:01 I've been playing this game all afternoon and to be honest I was dreading finding out what my 2200+ 512ram and radeon 8500 can do with it but I was very surprised at how good it looked and played. I have it on 640x480 res and details are on low but it still looks good, you still get blood smears on the floor and the gun effects are still there. Shadows look excellent, especially when you are using the flashlight. They must have optimised the crap out of this new engine to get it looking good on dinky old machines like mine.
I was gonna get me a 9800 card but maybe I'll hold off for a little while yet. My advice to those with older machines is to give it a try, or at least wait for the demo. You might be surprised.

safeasfuck Aug 3, 2004, 20:33 nice
i want one now...that'll teach me for asking :(
I've decided to download Doom 3 only to test and see if my pc will run the game.
If it works, then I'll uninstall, delete and buy it for £30.
I'd rather see if it works before doing the right thing :)
I was speaking to some friends in America on IRC earlier and I found this link while browsing the PlanetDoom forums.

I know it's a bit premature, but I know someone will come back on here and ask why their Doom 3 is running really sluggish.
PooperScooper Aug 3, 2004, 22:09 Your not gonna beleive this but I am now running at very playable 1024x768 with hardly any noticable slowdowns. My system specs are on my above post. And I haven't even tweaked it yet!
This engine is awsome. But for now it is all indoor gaming. I would like to see how it can perform with terrain. UT2004 always slowed down when you go outside of a building onto a large terain area. I wonder how doom3 engine can hold up to it.
Thanks for the link TW@. I'm'a give that a try. :)
As for the game itself I am pleased with it so far. I have only played about 3 hours altogether but from what I have seen I am pleased. My only wish is that it does not get repetative. So far its all been about unlocking security areas by collecting PDA's from dead people. I hope this ends soon and we get something new to do.
The weapons feel really good to use. I have just discovered a HUGE minigun. That thing is fun, fun, fun.
The enemy are varied and fun to kick the shit out of. From zombies to large neanderthal like beasts that throw fireballs at you, to really creepy spiders that jump at you like lightning. Its reall spooky and it will scare the shit out of you when you turn a corner and see a monster leap ot of the shadows at you.

Cloudane Aug 5, 2004, 16:21 *Smirk*.. Doom 1... hey, the graphics were awesome at the time! :)
stoke_fields Aug 5, 2004, 19:43 Stoke: Can I come play at your house?
Kormiic, oh how long I have waited for you to ask.
harry007jnr Aug 5, 2004, 20:25 This was put up on www.penny-arcade.com yesterday:
I can say without satisfaction that we've been less than kind to Doom 3 over the course of its development. We make the calls that seem appropriate based on the information that exists, and by and large I think we do alright. Precisely because of the technology that runs it, the screenshots it produces are incapable of communicating what it can do in fullness. Simply put, you have never seen the things you will see playing this game. I'll give you an example.
They have a monster who is an upside-down head with legs, a la The Thing. If you look at it in a screenshot, it looks pretty stupid. When you see that the thing is actually draped with wet skin, skin that looks absolutely real in the simulated light, you might pull your feet back from under your computer desk. Even their rocket heads were not as hilarious as still screens make them out to be. Certainly, your introduction to them is highly unpleasant - but you probably know that already.
My machine is not new in any interpretation of that word. The only real claim to fame I have on here is the SATA RAID I sometimes refer to with affection - outside of that, we're talking about an AMD 2400, a gig of RAM, and a 9700 Pro. A couple summers ago, you might have coveted this beast at a LAN Party. These days, Farcry takes this machine out behind the woodshed.
I am startled at how well this game performs.
I'm running ATI's 4.9 Beta drivers, designed with this game in mind, and I'm able to play the game at 1024 by 768, high quality, with enough performance to feel like I'm getting the real deal. The game itself chose 800 by 600, but I have a reputation to maintain. If it chose the same thing for you, make the jump to 1024 manually and see if you can tolerate it. I think you'll agree, that simple leap is the difference between "marginal improvement over other genre entries" and "I am looking through my monitor at events which are occurring on another world."
id's storytelling, too, has come a long way. Someone over there played and loved Irrational's System Shock 2, working the notion of e-mails and audio diaries into the experience. Let me say something about the interfaces in game for a moment - the computers one interacts with are essentially perfect. Crisp, clean, genuine interfaces you manually interact with. As a developer, you're going to have a hard time getting away with some muddy, two-state texture after this.
I think that what I had expected was another piece of powerful technology gummed to a bare-bones proof of concept. That was cynical of me, but id virtually invented the "free standing tech demo as game" format. I'm happy to be wrong - this is a rich experience in its own right, cunning use of custom technology married to narrative enough to provide momentum. When one of these mod teams finalizes a co-op experience for this game, you may not hear from me for a while.
If Tycho likes it then I'm interested, that man has impeccable taste in games.
Erm, how much is an Athlon64 again?
Dear Mods, I posted the entire article cause it'll disapear in a few days and PA's archives are a bitch to navigate. Please don't kill me, thx.
PooperScooper Aug 5, 2004, 22:35 I agree with almost everything Tycho says. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it.
The only thing I'm not so sure about is the email thing. There are just two many of them to read. Every PDA you pick up you end up having to read every email in the hope that you get some new security code. Mostly your just wasting your time. I mean, you even get spam email. hehe. I commend the efforts to put a deep and beleivable story in there. There certainly a beleivable world on mars but at the cost of just wanting to get on with the fragging. There should be an option that cuts all the needles bits out.
Patch anyone?
Cloudane Aug 5, 2004, 23:01 Does 'idkfa' work? ;)
