View Full Version : Continuing The Pill.

I have read mixed views from doctors about this:

Many women these days do not bother to take the seven day break you are supposed to take when on the pill, therefore allowing them to skip periods and not having to put up with with the whole "inconvenient bother" of it all.
Whilst some doctors back this, others believe it isn't such a good idea and will not reccommend it until there has been more research into it.

I have purposely carried on taking the pill before when I was supposed to take my break (For Holidays etc), but never more than twice in a row, though if it was proved safe, I would LOVE to not have any more periods.
Does anyone do this?
and what do you think of it?

There's a new pill out and you have only 4 periods a year.

I've never tried that with the Pill but, in spite of the warnings from every older woman I know about how I wouldn't feel like a real woman anymore, I have never regretted getting a hysterectomy. Never having to worry about periods again is bliss.

My periods stopped entirely with the depo injection, although, I am fairly sure this screwed up my fertility.

Its not a good idea to take the pill incessantly.

Menstruation is a natural body process, and just like all natural body processes you cant just "stop" it without having serious detrimental effects.

Its been proven that once is alright, for a honeymoon for instance, but prolonged use can have long term effects.

Its a seriously bad idea.

Not ovulating can help protect women from getting cancers of the womb and ovaries. So if you're not ovulating, you don't need to have a period every month, which is why when you're taking a pill that stops ovulation, you can take it for 2-3 months and then come off for a week.

:stupid:

I had two spells on depo, the second one lasting about a year. Im on the minipill at the moment, which you have to take every day anyway. I have a breakthrough bleed every couple of weeks which lasts a day or two.

eh? what kind of pill was i on then? i went on the pill when i was 16 (much to my mums disgust) and stayed on it until may 2003. i have always had periods every 4 weeks. i thought that was the norm with the pill. i even tried the not skipping for 7 days when on holiday but still had a period.

should i be worried?

I Don't know Anthillmob, but I've only done it 2 or 3 times and it DID stop me from having a period, I've read about it a lot too and know people that do it all the time.

An ex of mine did it for about 6 months and it didn't seem to give her any ill effects. seeing as the chemicals are just the same as ones your body creates already, albeit in different concentrations, I can't imagine it would do too much harm.

Re Mariska's post, how does the abscence of periods make you less of a woman? Having only four periods a year sounds like bliss, but I'd forget to take the pill each day. My friends who take the pill do so continuously with no bad effects.

Obviously i can't speak for Mariska but people said to me when i was due to have my hysterectomy that i would feel less of a woman and i was in fact offered counselling about this aspect of the operation. It wasn't just because you no longer have periods to contend with but the main reason seemed to be that you no longer have a womb.
Some women also looose one or both ovaries and in the case of loosing both then have to have HRT for the rest of thier lifes. Which if like me your only 30 when you have the operation seems like a long long time. Luckily for me i still have one ovary so i don't need any HRT.
Although i don't suffer from PMT i can still tell when i would have had a period by the way my body changes and i still get a pain in certain areas of my body.
I always thought that having the Hysterectomy was the best thing ever at the time i had it done. I already had my children in fact my youngest daughter was just under a year at the time so it was great having no periods no need to worry about getting pregnant again etc.

Now though because i got divorced and am now marrying again to someone who has no children of his own it does sometimes upset me to think we can never ever have a child together. Then there are other times when i look at my best mate who had a little boy a month before her 40th birthday and im relived that i can't have anymore.:)
