View Full Version : So why does everyone hate Man United??
Zutroy Jul 25, 2004, 21:45 Since as the new MH.com will forbid me from defending any celebrity I like (i.e. the Man United players), I thought I'd ask everyone why my beloved reds are hated by so many football fans and then give my response to the reasons. You never know, maybe my counter-argument will leave you with a different opinion on United!
I'm sure there are many reasons why they are hated and believe it or not, there are some things I don't like about the club aswell.....
So fire away!
marleyb Jul 25, 2004, 22:16 man utd are not my teams local rivals so why the hell would i hate them ?
i hate scunthorpe / grimsby and lincoln.
i dont understand all this "we hate man utd" shit
Wee Dougie Jul 26, 2004, 10:39 In no particular order:-
1) the legions of "fans" that they have that have absolutely no connection to Manchester but declare themselves to be diehard fans eg people who only follow clubs that are successful rather than their local club, most of the Phillipines, Thailand, etc.
2) that whinging ungracious clock-watching cunt of a manager. Not that this implies that he isn't a good manager. He's proved that at Aberdeen and Man United. But he's a horrible individual.
3) Eamonn Holmes.
4) the relentless arse-licking from sections of the media eg Eamonn Dunphy, Pat Crerand, Clive Tyldesley.
5) the whole Rio Ferdinand saga where rather than just admit they were in error they started trying to throw their weight about and bought their player a much longer ban.
6) Roy Keane
pishmaster Jul 26, 2004, 11:51 Theres only one thing more annoying about all of the above, and thats a Man Utd 'fan' in denial about all of the above.
The only reason people object to Man U having such a wide fan base is because their own team is simply not good enough to attract a wide fan base..so stop bitching and take a moment of introspection to see how shit your team is instead of deflecting your disappointment onto successful teams.
Wee Dougie Jul 26, 2004, 12:22 The only reason people object to Man U having such a wide fan base is because their own team is simply not good enough to attract a wide fan base..so stop bitching and take a moment of introspection to see how shit your team is instead of deflecting your disappointment onto successful teams.
Its an objection that people have been raising when Man Utd went decades without winning the league, went thirty years between European Cup wins, dropped into Division 2, etc. It's fuck all to do with them being successful.
pishmaster Jul 26, 2004, 12:26 A moment of introspection to see how shit my team is just isnt enough,in fact an eternity of introspection to see how shit my team is would barely do it justice, but that isnt really the point,Ive paid my dues, watched my team lose on a regular basis both home and away over the past 20 years or so,though rarely get the chance to see how their developement into a mediocre 1st division team is going due to business commitments, but yes it is very annoying when Man Utd fans, and it is nearly always Man Utd fans, start gloating about 'their' team, when they`ve never been anywhere near Manchester, sorry I mean Salford.Though looking at your post you`re going down the 'ur jus jelouz' route.
All together now 'Are you nicola roberts in disguise?....are you nicola roberts in disguise?'
Dazzla Jul 26, 2004, 14:24 The only reason people object to Man U having such a wide fan base is because their own team is simply not good enough to attract a wide fan base..so stop bitching and take a moment of introspection to see how shit your team is instead of deflecting your disappointment onto successful teams.
No.
the reason I object to ManU having 'such a wide fan base' is that their existence as a football team is now secondary to their existence as a media and merchandising organisation. The team on the pitch are now a function of the club and plc, not the other way round, as it should be. Peter Kenyon was the architect of the 'genius' strategfy that saw ManU make kits in sweatshops in South-East Asia for pennies, sell them in other parts of SE Asia for forty quid upwards a piece and spend the money on selling players for a fraction of the cost that he bought them six months previously.
Unfortunately, this strategy has worked so well that just about every other club in England (and probably Scotland too) now sees this as the sole route to success.
Perversely, by a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, this has now become true.
However, I don't really hate ManU any more. I think they're going to get their come-uppance soon.
I really fucking hate Chelsea though.
Eertamai Jul 26, 2004, 14:39 The more successfull the team, the more it is hated. People just got bored of Man Utd winning all the bloody time, so it was easy to moan about it. I've seen on football message boards that the level of hatred for Man Utd is now in decline with Arsenal's popularity on the slide, and suprise suprise, Chelsea's too.
And Gonzo, people don't object about the wide fan base, it's the silly fools who pretend they're die hard supporters when in fact they know nothing about the club, hardly follow it, and on the whole live in Essex/Surrey.
Zutroy Jul 26, 2004, 15:45 1) the legions of "fans" that they have that have absolutely no connection to Manchester but declare themselves to be diehard fans eg people who only follow clubs that are successful rather than their local club, most of the Phillipines, Thailand, etc.
Here we go.......
1) I admit, glory supporters are nothing but a burden for true Mancunian United fans (there are thousands of manc United fans, and it's fucking stupid to say there aren't any, which is what many people do. They are the local club for West Manchester and surrounding districts, a very highly-populated area.) Thai and Phillipino fans tend to support western teams because they have no decent ones of their own. Liverpool are actually more popular in Thailand btw.
2) Ferguson can be irritating at times, but Arsene Wenger is just as whingy and ungracious when things don't go his way. The fact that he's a great manager is ALL that needs to be said.
3)Eamonn Holmes is harmless and Irish, and the Irish tend to follow english teams.
4) I don't know who Eamonn Dunphy is. Pat Crerand won the European Cup with United and played for them for over ten years, so no suprise he doesn't criticise them much, as he's probably a fan.
Clive Tyldesley actually said that Arsenal's recent side are the best to ever win the premiership. Not exactly flattering to his United eh?
5) United have admitted they were in error, but an 8-month ban for taking a drugs test 36 hours late is ludicrous. Rio obviously never took drugs and shouldn't have been banned for that long.
6) Keano is an ace midfielder who has now shedded his aggression
Theres only one thing more annoying about all of the above, and thats a Man Utd 'fan' in denial about all of the above.
Like I give a shit.......
Like I give a shit.......
What is the point of this thread then?
I don't hate Man Utd by the way, but I do think Roy Keane is a nasty minded little shit.
Zutroy Jul 26, 2004, 15:49 Peter Kenyon was the architect of the 'genius' strategy that saw ManU make kits in sweatshops in South-East Asia for pennies, sell them in other parts of SE Asia for forty quid upwards a piece and spend the money on selling players for a fraction of the cost that he bought them six months previously.
And that's why I'm glad the cunt is now at Chelski. Kenyon is also responsible for having 'Football Club' removed from the United badge. It was also his idea to bring Veron to United. Smart move there, Kenyon!
pishmaster Jul 26, 2004, 15:56 Man Utd`s recent decline seems to have coincided with less and less people within Football giving a fuck about what Alex Ferguson thinks or wants, though its no coincidence. His recent moaning about Ronaldo playing in this years Olympics seems to have fallen on deaf ears, and is quite honestly laughable,he has less influence over those around him, especially those in decision making positions, people seem to have finally learnt they can say "shut the fuck up fergie you old cunt and get back in your pram".
lapafrax Jul 26, 2004, 19:19 Man U fans are arrogant!! At least that's why I used to dislike them (I don't any more!!).
I dunno, Man united fans in the 90's used to be too cocky surrounding their success at the time.
Wee Dougie Jul 27, 2004, 08:12 3)Eamonn Holmes is harmless and Irish, and the Irish tend to follow english teams.
He's one of the most irrittating twats on the telly. His never ending witterings about "man yoo" elevate him to supertwat status
Dunphy is a Man Utd apologist that's been writing in various papers for years and was ghost-writer on the Keane biography.
Crerand used (is?) a contributor to some local radio stations and never fails to mention Man Utd at every opportunity eg
"So Pat, what do you think will happen in today's Stockport vs Crewe game"
"Well, I think it will be a clash of styles between Crewe's passing game and Stockport's more direct approach, but at the end of the day I'll plump for a win for Utd"
So Tyldsley admitted that Arsenal are a good side. Shockereoony! He'll still be creaming himself next time he commentates at Old Trafford.
Oh, and one thing I somehow missed in my original list -
The fact that the club and fans refer to themselves as United as if they are the first and/or only club to come up with that name.
marleyb Jul 27, 2004, 08:25 the man utd world wide fan base goes back along way
first > the munich air crash won man utd much sympathy world wide and lots of fans started to "follow man utd"
man utd where the first brit club to play in europe even though the football
league was against it.
bobby charlton and later george best two players admired all over the world.
man utd playing many friendlys across the planet making new fans..
glory fans > well to all true man utd fans , glory hunters buy man utd shirts ect and that makes man utd more cash which makes man utd a rich club who can then buy the top players so glory hunters help man utd.
all top teams have fans from all over the country. hell most newcastle fans come from gateshead / and all over the north east area...
man utd have a very loyal fan base even when they won fuck all for years they got top crowds and even when they played in div 2 those fans still followed man utd.
i follow hull city win or lose. but i sure dont mind if fans from outside of hull
start to follow hull, more fans = more money = more success...
thousands of man utd fans live in manchester..
pishmaster > man utds decline ? what decline ??
never been outside the top 4 in the premier league ???
thats f---king brilliant !
lapafrax > after 25 years of winning next to f--k all no wonder man utd fans
got cocky when the started to win things...
fergie moans and moans when man utd lose . thats what all managers do if they love the club there at... if peter taylor doesnt moan when hull lose i would want to know why he didnt ...
anyway , me ? i just dont figure why so many hate man utd ?
oo and i do not support man utd .
Wee Dougie Jul 27, 2004, 09:36 man utd where the first brit club to play in europe

When Liverpool dominated in the 70's and 80's, scouse fans weren't as arrogant!
Zutroy Jul 27, 2004, 18:59 Marleyb's post at the top of this page is superb. I've said all of what he said loads of times on MH.com, but I was bound to, since as I'm a Man United fan. Nice to hear it from a neutral perspective......
amorpork Jul 28, 2004, 21:03 People dont like Man U because they are successful. It happened with Liverpool when they were at the top of their game and winning everything.
Hopefully everyone will hate Blackburn soon because we will be winning everything (I think not)
marleyb Jul 29, 2004, 01:00 wee dougie > hibs played in europe before man united did .
ahh i learn something that i never knew

SLOTH82 Jul 29, 2004, 16:12 I don`t like Man U and I always shout for their opponents no matter who they are.
I can`t really give a 100% exact reason why. Lots of little things really which have been covered in the posts above.
Fingers crossed that their slide into mediocrity continues in the next few years.
pishmaster Jul 29, 2004, 16:31 Its a combination of smug 'fans',Fergie,Roy Keane, several other players, the board of directors, their attitude to smaller clubs and their 'money before the welfare of Football in general' attitude ,but mainly the last two reasons,Man Utd arent exclusively hated for some of these, but this thread isnt about those other clubs .

Odds on it was Man Utd.
comababy Aug 2, 2004, 18:48 During my student years in Manc. I met a lot of City fans who hated Man U to an almost psychopathic degree. Part of this was just rivalry, of course, but they did take umbrage at Man U being seen as the major representative of Manchester and its people when, at their heartfelt insistence, a true Mancunian (born there, presumably) supports City. Something to do with legacy and location, apparently. Was this the initial seed of hatred that others took on board?
Oddly, the only major Man U fan I knew was one of my tutors - and he tended to keep quiet about it.

I don't know where the myth that 'true mancunians' all support City comes from. Manchester is a HUGE city with almost 1 Million people living there.
As someone who was born in Manchester, and lived there for 5 years, Manchester is very, very red, and although City have a decent fanbase (decent in the sense that they have a large number of fans), MUFC is by far the more popular club, especially in the west of the city. I'd say a 60& United, 40% City split minimum..........
what was it the Chelsea fans sang to the visiting Man Utd supporters last season - to the tune of Guantanamero - "Live round the corner, you only live round the corner" ......

So I'm not the only one praying that Macclesfield get lucky then?
I think every neutral in the country would want Macc to win. I certainly do but then I have a slight bias towards the Silkmen (my Godson's Dad is from there and is a huge fan.)
The good news is that Ince will be eligible to play so could make an appearance which would be fantastic.
Here's a cheery thought from a Macc fan:
Everyone here, apart from yours truly, seems to think that Macc will get thumped and should be glad of the £300K+ we'll get.
My thinking........................ Danny Swailes has his elbow in Drogba's ear a couple of times on a cold, wet afternoon and he starts thinking of the warm dressing room, Allan Navarro and Jamie Tolley put in a few crunching tackles on Lampard and Joe Cole who vanish to the fringes of the game as they don't want to get injured for the Champs Lge. John Terry's thoughts, in the 88th minute, turn to testing the rear suspension of hisBentley with some young lady and Matty McNeil pops in to put the ball in the net. 1-0. Simple really !!!!!!
And Man City at home in the 4th round. Not too much to ask for, surely ???
Flip Flopper Dec 7, 2006, 14:23 I despise Paul Ince (mouthy twat who posed in a M an Utd shirt while still a West Ham player) so I'm pretty neutral on this match.
it would have been better if chelsea had to play in some tiny ground.

People who purport to really, really HATE a team, be it Man U, chelski, Newcastle(spit!) heh heh, Really need to take a long hard look at themselves, It's a football team, they have never, to my knowledge, started a war, killed thousands of people, destroyed the continuity of the timeline or enslaved civilisations, And, as much as I love my team, they are at the end of the day, a football team.

I'm sure there are many reasons why they are hated and believe it or not, there are some things I don't like about the club aswell.....
So fire away!
Man U are not hated, they are much loved across the country. Especially in Liverpool.
"who the fuck are man united"
man u , arn't so much hated ,as they are a non entity in most peoples opinion.
99.4% of people have there own teams to worry about without pondering about the self-importance of Man U ,Arsenal & god forbid Chelsea and the ilk
I'm off to watch Rugby Town tommorow and the last team i will give a shite about are man u , whilst Rugby are struggling in the relegation zone of the BGB Premier division.
