View Full Version : DOOM 3 unstable?
postal postie Aug 17, 2004, 17:16 just received my doom 3 game and installed it. but in about half an hour it has frozen 7 times and dumped me back into windows for no reason 3 times. i took this to be that the graphics setting was too high so putting it on medium has made it more stable but it's still stalling. anyone else experienced this? is it only a graphics card problem?
pentium4 3.06mhz
windows XP
1gb ram memory
radeon 9800 128mb graphics card
is my set up.
i will go a hunting for patches to see if it's a recognised problem as well.
PooperScooper Aug 17, 2004, 17:26 I don't think there are any patches out for it just yet.
Your best bet is to try the new ati (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html) driver that has been released just the other day.
postal postie Aug 17, 2004, 17:35 cheers. i'll probably wait for it to be on a computer mag cd. the download size is too big for my modem. :(
dominoid Aug 17, 2004, 17:53 That might take a while. I'll be getting the new drivers as soon as I get connected, if you want, I'll burn you a copy and post it to you if you send me an sae.
PM me if you wan tem to do this.
Mr. Biscuit Aug 17, 2004, 18:31 I haven't had any problems with it yet other than having to change my nappy every twenty minutes
Running at 800 x 600 on high with my GeForce 4600, 512MB RAM and Athlon 2.1 processor.
Did you install the latest Direct X which came with the discs?
stoke_fields Aug 17, 2004, 21:01 Im playing it on the unrecommended ULTRA GRAPHICSORZ!!!! and it works fine. Not a problem. And I completed it today. The ending is wank.
Rustnever Aug 17, 2004, 21:20 i think it might have something to do with your ati graphics card
try looking hear http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoom/forum.asp?fid=5733
stoke_fields Aug 17, 2004, 22:13 Works fine with me. I have a Radeon 9800 XT.
safeasfuck Aug 18, 2004, 17:13 i've heard there are some sound issues - if you have surround sound enabled, switch it off in the game options see if its that
postal postie Aug 18, 2004, 17:16 that's an interesting site sjcooper.
i don't know what the problem is but to start with it always froze when the guy does that scanning thing on you right at the start of the game. the sound always worked fine while it froze though. then it just randomly shut down into windows when something graphical happened like i'd run round the corner and the toilet door opened then the game would freeze.
having played it for awhile now though and the problems have stopped. i did load direct x from the doom cd.
dominoid Aug 18, 2004, 17:25 I had problems simaler to this in FFVIII on my old PC and I only managed to cure it by buying a new GFX card. I was uning a minimum spec card at the time though and a 9800 obviously isn't minimum spec.
Oooh, does your mobo fully support DirectX 9.0?
stoke_fields Aug 18, 2004, 19:11 i've heard there are some sound issues - if you have surround sound enabled, switch it off in the game options see if its that
I have EAX switched on with my 5.1s. GIVE THE RIGHT ANSWER!!!
safeasfuck Aug 18, 2004, 22:04 i was wondering how doom 3 was running on your uber-computer stoke...how is it?
stoke_fields Aug 19, 2004, 00:43 Supremely well I'm pleased to say, though curiously there seems to be occasional lag during door opening sequences. I am running it on Ultra High graphics though.
In worrying news though unemployment has left me in a rather dodgy situation with regards the payments on my PC. Potentially it may not be mine for much longer... :(

that is worrying :(
well, if its a choice between food & PC payments.....i've always said food is overrated, a meal is enjoyable for the 15 mins you're eating it, a PC can fill a whole night with fun
seriously tho mate - hope the job situation gets rectified soon
stoke_fields Aug 19, 2004, 16:56 Cheers-a-diddly, dude-o-rino!
postal postie Aug 19, 2004, 17:09 just tried it on ultra high graphics and i too get the lag with door opening. and when i shoot my gun. and when i fall off laders ;)
so i have it on high. no problems since that first day of play for me though
found some graphics drivers on my computer mag
