View Full Version : Best Console Ever?
Markela_F12 Sep 3, 2004, 23:12 What, in your humble opinion, is the best games console that has ever graced this Earth.
I personaaly would probably have to say it was the Super Nintendo. This console was a huge hit, not only because it was cheap at the time, but had a huge set of quite remarkable games.
Starfox
Super Metroid
Super Mario
Donkey Kong Country
Legend Of Zelda:Link To The Past
Mario Kart
I could continue on, but I would be here for a while. However, I do respect everyone's opinion and would like to hear your opinions. So, fire away...
Cloudane Sep 3, 2004, 23:19 Amiga, if it counts.
Otherwise the XBox, for its extreme moddability.
Markela_F12 Sep 3, 2004, 23:39 Amiga was good, but I don't know whether that classifies as a Computer or Games Console.
stoke_fields Sep 4, 2004, 00:17 I thought the right answer was the Dreamcast simply because nobody bought one and thus it wins.
PooperScooper Sep 4, 2004, 00:34 It has to be between the super nintento and the ps2 simply because they defined the generation of gaming that they took part in. They had all the best games and loads of them.
SirGruntSquared Sep 5, 2004, 20:35 Mastersystem every time
Markela_F12 Sep 5, 2004, 21:02 Did anyone in the world have a Sega Saturn? I have never seen anyone with one of these.
SirGruntSquared Sep 5, 2004, 21:07 Was that just a megadrive with a cd drive on the side? or was that a mega cd?
stoke_fields Sep 5, 2004, 22:50 That was indeed the Mega CD. The Saturn was the contemporary of the Playstation and the N64 back in those pre-Microsoft three console days.
Now the Mega Drive II with 32X - that was a console.
SirGruntSquared Sep 6, 2004, 09:43 I thought the dreamcast was a contempary of the playststion. My mate had the Mega Drive II streets of rage was one hell of a game.
stoke_fields Sep 6, 2004, 11:19 As I remember the Dreamcast managed to come out at a very odd time and be a sort of hybrid machine spanning the 32/64 and 128 bit consoles. If I'm right it came out before the PS2, was a 128 big console with dial-up online play as standard, had its own portable console built into the joypads, used CDs not DVDs and... hmm I need to check all this actually.
I had a Dreamcast, was a no bad machine except about a year after I bought it; it would suddenly start restarting itself when you were playing a game....you would get 5 - 10 mins into the game and it would cut off - way annoying. Plus the whole online thing was a complete joke.
Anyway - my vote goes for the megadrive - wish I hadn't of sold it - only got about £200 and that was with 17 games (this was like 10 years ago). I did so to buy the PS one......
SirGruntSquared Sep 6, 2004, 11:32 Was the sega Genesis just the American version of the Megadrive?

Yes it was
Mr. Biscuit Sep 6, 2004, 13:00 Have to say that my trusty Gameboy Advance has saved me from many panic attacks whilst using the shoddy London Underground so, diminutive as it may seem (although it's the equivalent of having a PS1 in your pocket), it will get my vote every time.
stoke_fields Sep 6, 2004, 13:24 Hang on. The GBA is only technically the equivalent of the PS1. It completely lacks the ability to make games which look better than those on the SNES however.
Mr. Biscuit Sep 6, 2004, 13:43 I wouldn't say that - Rayman is a consistently beautiful looking game, although that's the most recent game I bought (about 3 years ago now), 'cos I got so hacked off with the London Underground that I jacked in my job and got another one where I could actually drive to work.
Markela_F12 Sep 6, 2004, 20:16 I must say the Gamecube is a rather good console as well.
stoke_fields Sep 6, 2004, 22:32 I must say this too. So I shall.
The Gamecube is a rather good console as well.
Superandy Dec 24, 2004, 01:59 My friend had a Sega Megadrive and that was an amazing console but my vote would have to go to the PS2, not just because its the most modernn but because the quality of the graphics and the sheer range of games available
Wrath storm Dec 24, 2004, 02:08 XBOX STRAIGHT AWAY!!!!!!
Greasy Art Dec 24, 2004, 02:44 Sega Genesis (or Megadrive, I guess) was better than the Super Nintendo. My favorite game for Genesis was NHL 94. I still haven't played a better hockey game on any console.
Greasy Art Dec 24, 2004, 02:47 Tecmo Super Bowl for the first Nintendo (circa 1989 or so) was also a great game that has only been beat by contemporary American Football games in recent years... it probably took 9 or 10 years to beat it (which for video games is like centuries in normal time).
Markela_F12 Dec 25, 2004, 16:08 Anyone remember the Neo-Geo pocket?
XBOX STRAIGHT AWAY!!!!!!
Don't shout man we can hear you.
Amiga was good but not sure if it counts as a console either. The games on that were addictive as hell (not that anyone I know ever got any from the shops because they were to expensive and :yarr: ).
I got an N64 which was pretty cool and Goldeneye owns any other fps I have ever played.
Got an XBox and that has some pretty cool stuff on it too but it is let down in the loading times for games and the graphics just seem to get jumpy at times especially when there is a lot happening on screen.
Got a Gamecube too and that is the best console around IMHO. It has the fastest load times and the graphical quality is superb and in all the games I played on it I have not seen it slow down or get jerky, lose resolution (except for Enter the Matrix the most poo's game ever!) and the only thing that it didn't have was the quantity of games but there was definitely quality.
PS2 is the worst console I have ever played on despite the fact that it has the most games available for it (by EA) and there is very little to spark the imagination. The graphics on it are slightly better than a PS1 (but not by much) and the load times are quite long too. Then there is the problems with the disc read error that happens quite a lot and you have a complete pile of horse kak.
Played on a SNES when I was in Japan and that was quite fun but I didn't play it enough to form an opinion on it.
If I were to rank them from my experiences then it would have to be:
GCN
N64
XBox
SNES
PS1
PS2
(with the Amiga being counted as a console then it would come up above N64).
Greasy Art Dec 27, 2004, 03:05 If I were to rank them from my experiences then it would have to be:
GCN
N64
XBox
SNES
PS1
PS2
Nintendo fan, eh?
I play mainly sports games. Nintendo can't compete in that genre in the context of any generation.
deadflower Jan 11, 2005, 18:57 Dreamcast.
Reasons????
1 - Shenmue
2 - Shenmue 2
3 - Phantasy Star Online
4 - MSR
5 - Sonic Adventures 1 and 2
6 - Skies of Arcadia
7 - Crazy Taxi
I could go on, I still have my DC and use it more now than ever, Shenmue still gets a battering and I personally think MSR pisses on Project Gotham Racing.
Fun?? Oh yes!!!
DF.
stevie_b Jan 12, 2005, 13:15 The Xbox is a good console, but the limited availability of games lets it down. Although it does have good control pad.
My favourite console of all time would have to be the Mega Drive, if only for the amount of time I used to spend playing it. In fact I still have it set up in my room now!
I still have my mega-drive set up. Admittedly in a draw, because the gamecube, x-box and atari7800 take up a fair amount of space.
I remember the neo-geo pocket. It didnt do too well.
SNES - mario kart... still play it now... only about 12 years after I first bought it.
Kormiic Jan 17, 2005, 19:38 SNES... still play the emulator a lot. I've got nearly 800 ROMS for it now, even those silly semi-porno games that nobody liked.
Zapdos Jan 19, 2005, 23:28 PS1 and not because of the graphics, gameplay or anything like that
The PS1 added much needed competition to the games industry, it grabbed both Nintendo and Sega by the balls and shook.
Ok there may have been competition in the past, 3DO, CDi and the Jaguar, but none of them were from a well known company that could stand jumping straight in feet first to an all out consumer war.
Next reason, Games, quite simple comparing to the Dreamcast and the N64 at the time the games were still mainly aimed at the younger generation (PC Not counted here) PS1 comes out with games offering blood violence and adult orientated games (GTA, Resi etc) This forced Sega to realise that maybe it wasn't only kids that played games (Sadly a bit too late and the saturn and dreamcast died) Nintendo have yet to realise that adults play games as often yet it seems, although respect is due to them for getting Resi away from Sony for at least a few games. But when Ninty got Resi 2 they had to produce a bog standard version due to the cartridge factor, another sad fact is that Nintendo at the time were not going to change their opinion that people didn't want a CD based machine, interestingly enough the reason for that was they saw what a flop the Mega CD had been.
So the PS1 managed to outsell and outlive the Saturn, N64 AND dreamcast a feat not accomplished in the gaming world since the days of the Atari 2600.
But my main all time fave reason for the PS1 being the best console ever. . .
I can only imagine how much Nintendo was kicking themselves, I often wonder if the head guy of Ninty sat there on the release day of the PS1 and say "We've created a monster." (Or something very similar in Japanese)
For those who haven't heard the tale or don't know what the hell i'm going on about. . . Nintendo comissioned Sony to create a cd based add-on for the SNES to compete directly with the Mega CD, after watching both the Mega CD and the 32X go the way of the dinosaur, Ninty pulled the plug.
Sony left and took their basic designs with them, (This is one reason that the layout of a PS1 pad was so similar to the SNES when it was released.) they worked their designs over and converted the machine to stand alone without needing to be plugged into the SNES and thus the PS1 was born. I just find it Ironic that in trying to beat one of their competitors Nintendo actually created a rival that practically blew them out of the water in a relativly short space of time.
XBox....if you could do what I've done to mine, you'd know why :D
Zapdos Jan 24, 2005, 14:25 XBox....if you could do what I've done to mine, you'd know why :D
Thrown it away? :)
Tell us then what did you do to it?
glenwils Jan 30, 2005, 12:25 ps2 will get my vote. excelent graphics and excelent games.
Dazzla Jan 30, 2005, 16:52 I thought the right answer was the Dreamcast simply because nobody bought one and thus it wins.
You called trumps too early. The Atari Jaguar was a far superior box of tricks.
XBox....if you could do what I've done to mine, you'd know why :D
What I'm wondering is how did you manage to enlarge the USB port sufficiently?
Oh, you didn't...
eremyj Feb 15, 2005, 17:18 I thought the right answer was the Dreamcast simply because nobody bought one and thus it wins.
I had one of those, lol.
Zapdos Feb 15, 2005, 22:10 I thought the right answer was the Dreamcast simply because nobody bought one and thus it wins.
I worked at Sega on teh dreamcast, absolutly hated it when i started but by the time i left I had a little more respect for the machine, just a shame that Sega was throwing out shite like Sword of the Beserk. IMO it was only third party titles that were keeping that system alive
bassoon Feb 16, 2005, 07:29 I had a Saturn and a Dreamcast. I think both were solid consoles, but they didn't have the marketing $ of Sony. Also, the games were too easily pirated.
Saturn bomberman and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo are two of the greatest console games of all time on the Saturn
Madd_un Feb 19, 2005, 00:14 I had a Saturn, and damn proud of it too.
My fave console by far. I remember Red Alert with the Ion Cannon, I loved it. I had loads of games as well, but I swapped it for a PS. Big mistake. The PS was old and barely worked and the most of the games were copied, which the twat that swapped it with me didn't tell me before hand!
I only agreed because because my cousin had a PS and I loved playing Tenchu and Dead Ball Zone!
One day I want to buy a PS and/or Saturn with a bucket load of games and be promptly fired from work for not turning up again.
:) ahhh happy thoughts
Royster Feb 19, 2005, 02:04 SNES
I loved that when i was a wee nipper.
Greasy Art Feb 19, 2005, 02:32 c'mon... we're all prejudiced to what we decided to buy when we didn't know any better.
Sega Genesis is still my favorite... generations passed and I finally bought another console (ps2)... the Genesis will always have a spot in my heart. It does make me teary eyed to think of the ol' girl. Nintendo was just a big bully to me... I did wear 2 of their first generation offerings out though.
jonny_boy27 Feb 20, 2005, 15:50 Anyone remember the Neo-Geo pocket?
they were a massive fad at my school with the chinese guys importing 5 each from hong kong for their english mates! died a pretty quick death i think
TheHippo Dec 8, 2006, 03:54 I would easily have to say the Sega Genesis.
this is why:
simply put, it has been the most revolutionary system.
1. first system that could handle a modem (bought seperately)
2. first system to use a hard drive (bought seperately)
3. could play previous system games (with powerbase converter)
4. handled 8-bit ,16-bit AND 32-bit games (Vectorman and Phantasy Star 4)
5. first system to read CD's (with Sega CD attached)
of course it wasn't all included though, they made the genesis a very versatile system with many un-used ports, which would come in handy for when they released the modem and hard drive and CD drive.
and the PSP can go to the dumpster. the Sega Game Gear was pulling those stunts back in the 90's. you could watch TV on it, listen to the radio, and play Genesis games on it, along with its own obviously.
I've never gotten rid of my systems (in-order):
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis
Sega CD
Sega Saturn
Nintendo 64
Sega Dreamcast
Xbox
You called trumps too early. The Atari Jaguar was a far superior box of tricks.
Neo geo CD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_CD) anyone?
UnoChild Dec 8, 2006, 07:34 XBox....if you could do what I've done to mine, you'd know why :D
I can imagine it's similar to what myself and 'bomb have done to ours.
The 3 fucking 60 btw. It's got my right back into gaming, and after a crazy month of awesome games, an exciting future lies ahead.
Robbie485 Oct 26, 2008, 20:59 Well I Do Like The Xbox 360
But The PS2 Has A MASSIVE Range Of Games
Hmmm.....
Hard One!
dogbomb Oct 27, 2008, 14:38 The PS2 is also last generation.
If we are going back generations - I'd put the original Megadrive a pretty high rating.
dexcel13 Oct 28, 2008, 15:18 I'd say in time spent playing it would have to be the SNES, a lot fo time was wasted playing that machine, really enjoed it, but have trouble thinkign back to the oens i used to play a lot, i thinkt here was a lot of mario cart and desert storm and street figther, can't really rememebr much more.
In terms of most enjoyment i would say PS2, definatley with the release of GTA. had great fun playing that so fo me i would say the PS2 was my fav.
