View Full Version : womans troubles
thevinesrok Sep 25, 2004, 13:38 For as long as i can remember i have had irregular periods, for a while they will come every fortnight, one heavy and lasting for about a week, one light, and then after a while revert to normal monthlys for a few months. I thought they had sorted themselves out as i was fine for a good lil while, but apparently i was mistaken. Its horrid because apart from being damn inconvenient it just makes you feel tired all the time. I also once heard something vagualy about a hormone imbalance which causes irregular periods being connected to depression, which would make sense. Anyway I just wondered if anyone could tell me if they had any similar experiences and what happened. I'm a bit dubious about going to the docs anyway, its not my fave place in the world and without any real knowledge of what the procedure might be for dealing with this i'm hesitant to go. Any advice appreciated.
All of my life I've had odd periods. For about 3/4 the year after puberty they appear to be regular although the time they start after the usual PMT has always varied.
During the remainder of the year I can have them two, three or five weeks apart for no apparent reason. I was never worried about it but I agree it's very inconvenient sometimes. My periods also have never lasted more than four days, often being only three, but are VERY heavy. Although I don't get stomach cramps any more, the shorter the period the worse my PMT was previously.
My PMT varies from being a bit down in the dumps and bored and irritable to thinking about suicide every opportune moment of the day so if you are already depressed a bad period can really wreck things in your head.
I would never ever suggest hormone control via contraceptive pill or jab, patch etc because this has always made me ten times worse - you really REALLY don't want that kind of misery.
It's worth going to see your doctor in case there are alternatives I don't know about but in my experience they either brush it off as 'your body still settling down' or try to put you on hormonal contraception (something I'd never suggest to someone suffering from depression mild, moderate or severe). A good female doctor may know of other methods to try controlling your periods including the 'daft' stuff like alternative therapies and homeopathy.
I also have never had regular periods.
Initially they were about 3 weeks apart, and sorry to be frank, but like a tap. My mum wouldnt beleive me, and I suffered for years.
Then I went on the pill at 17 and this calmed things down considerably. But, I was naff at taking it, so I went off and had the injection. This stopped my periods all together for 4.5 years, which was amazing. I felt like the martini girl ( anytime, any place, anywhere) But since I came off that things have gone from bad to worse. I dont have periods for 6 months, then I bleed on and off for 6 months. The days I bleed its gone back to being like a tap, and some days its difficult to even leave the house.
I would say go and see a female doctor, as she will be more sympathetic, and if you can have dates written down and what the flow is like. I finally got my doctor to refer me to the hospital, and they confirmed that I have PCOS ( polycysitic ovary syndrome) which causes the uneven bleeding, and endometrisis, which is the tap thing. So at least I know why.
blueeyes Sep 26, 2004, 03:12 Mine also have always been messed up. There have been times that I've ragged for 3 months straight then nothing for about 6 months. Right now it's back to the bleeding for about the last 3 weeks, however not continusly it will stop for a day or two in there. It sucks because you never know when it will start or stop so you always have to be prepared. I also have PCOS and endometriosis like Salsa. As far as PMS goes....hell there are times that I'm the "PMS Queen from Hell" and can't even stand to be around myself! Endometriosis causes horribly painful cramps, however I can say that I don't always have the cramping. I'm always tired and never feel like I get enough sleep. Off and on since I've started my period I've taken different birth control pills just to regulate it and it usually helps. I haven't taken any for aboout 3 years now and have been thinking about going back on them just to help regulate me. Before my divorce my ex and I were wanting children and we ended up having to go to a fertility specialist who found a large cyst on one of my ovaries and I had to have surgery to remove it. I can't remember the exact measurements of it but do know that the surgeon told my ex that it was "bigger than a baseball but not quite as big as a softball". However we never conceived and I've come to the conclusion that I'll never be able to be a mom through natural childbirth and plan to adopt someday. Messed up periods are really nothing to take lightly, they can affect everything about you life from moods, hormones, fertility, etc. So you really should go to a doctor and get checked out.
slightly on a tanget, but in the same ball park. Did you know that Evening Primrose Oil is good for PMT? I get it nasty at times, so much i just cry for 2/3 days. But, if I take the evening primrose it seems to stop it getting so nasty,i still feel grumpy, but not so hurt.
I get mine every six weeks or so. I also bleed in between.
drowningkitten Sep 26, 2004, 11:53 Hormone imbalances can cause irregular periods. The most comon is a condition called POCS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) but that tends to cause long gaps between periods, so you wouldnt bleed for say 6 months, and is also associated with things like being overweight and a type of diabetes. If your doctor thought it might be to do with your hormones he'd look at them by doing some blood tests. He'd probably want to examine you too, but that is quick and painless.
If your feeling tired all the time and your have frequent or heavy periods you may be a bit anaemic. Try taking iron tablets which ull be able to get from the chemist or eating more red meat. I think brocolli is high in iron too. U need iron to make blood.
It might be something really simple that can be easily sorted out. I had problems when I was a teenager because my hormone levels were off and my doc put me on the pill. It made me feel much better and made my periods regular. Your GP will probably just examine u and take some blood tests to look at your hormones.

I tried that. I previously used 'Seven Seas Hormonal Balance' pills and they were fantastic. Barely any mood change and very little physical changes.
Then I switched to Cod Liver Oil & Evening Primrose Oil capsules and they did nothing for me :(
So now I'm back on the first tablets along with Haliborange Omega 3 chewy capsules because both together rock... feel on top of the world and mega alert all of the time.
I started off fairly regular but I had a few spells on the contraceptive injection and it all went pear-shaped from that. It was fine while I was on it, but once I came off it to try and get pregnant it all went a bit loopy. I used to have 2-3 periods a year and after 2 years like that I bombed off to the doctors who referred me to the hospital and the rest is history. They gave me a diagnosis of PCOS, and made me lose weight. This brought my periods back into some sort of semblance of order, every 4-5 weeks, and with treatment Munch was produced.
After that, things returned to a 4-5 week cycle eventually, and as I have continued to get thinner, have stabilised.
However, I now have 7 1/2 months of period free luxury to look forward to. Think of all the money I'll save on tampax!

Is this your way of saying your pregnant?
Its one way of saying it yes. I left three different ways of saying it about in this forum, but you are the first person to pick up on it. Well done you!
:D

Yeah sounds good to me. Will make it in the New Year as it`s a hectic time for me between now and christmas and I am sure you won`t be too big by then.
Bloody hell everybody is pregnant. Congratulations!
I'll be damned if I don't get to make a whole thread when I finally 'catch'.
My youngest daughter is having periods every two weeks at the moment and they are really heavy, took her to docotors on Monday and shes taken a blood test so we shall wait and see what is what.

Thanks Marie ;)
I made a thread in the past for munch, I thought I would go a more subtle route this time.
By the way, talking of Catch, that man has "supersperm" (tm) so may not be such a bad bet for the aforementioned task in hand.

Thankyou.

My periods are totally irregular... I never get them closer than 7 weeks apart. I've been 4 months without one for absolutely no reason. It might be because of my "dangerously low" weight..?
I dunno. my mums wern't regular either and she isnt dead yet so i figure i'm safe...
