I jammed my left pinky finger last night playing Basketball. (Bullet pass hit it straight on).. I played the rest of that game with it in pain... played the second game basically one handed.. stayed out of the third game.. Anyway, a jammed finger isn't that big of a deal. But today, on the palm side, it is bruised pretty bad (and still fairly swollen). I've not seen that before, the bruising, I mean. What's up with that?

what's up with it? I'd say it's bruised and swollen :(

What did you jam it in?

Greasy Art
May 24, 2005, 14:21
Yeah.. but it was just jammed. The ball basically hit it on the tip.. thus jamming it. why should it be bruised from the top knuckle down to the bottom knuckle? Even with my extensive history of such things, I've never seen that happen before. It can't be a sprain.

6. To crush or bruise: jam a finger.

It can't be a sprain.
I guess it can be... and I guess this is just a worse jammed/sprained finger than i've had before (that's hard to believe though). Usually (or never... i can't remember seeing it like that before) I don't see bruising with this injury.

Jammed Fingers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the most common injuries in all of sports is the "jammed" finger. This is actually a sprain involving the ligaments or the ligamentous capsules surrounding the various joints of the fingers and is (especially) evident in the interphalangeal joints (knuckles) and the metacarpophalangeal joint (base) of the thumb. These sprains are commonly the result of forced motion at a joint which stresses the supporting ligaments causing varying degrees of damage. This motion is typically lateral (sideways) or hyperextension, damaging the collateral (side) or volar (palm side) ligaments respectively. If the forces involved are powerful enough, a dislocation is possible. Depending on the amount of associated trauma, enduring instabilities can occur and may require medical referral.
Causes:

Acute injury to the finger (e.g. hit by ball, stick, opponent, or ground).
Improper catching technique.
Signs/Symptoms:
Pain and/or tenderness surrounding the involved joint (note: pain in the middle of a bone may indicate a fracture).
Swelling and stiffness surrounding the involved joint.
Treatment:
Modify activity.
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes several times per day.
Treat with anti-inflammatories as prescribed by your physician.
"Buddy taping" (i.e. tape the injured digit to an adjacent finger).
Rehabilitation:
Gentle range of motion and strengthening exercises.

I used to play basketball and have hurt fingers many a time. Fingers usually swell up but can`t say I`ve ever had much bruising.

I can wholeheartedly sympathise with you Greasy. I have on many occaison jammed a finger playing basketball. Always the same one too. Its like a papercut. Doesnt look like much, but hurts like buggery. My pinky on my right hand has a constant lump on the first knuckle now. When I would jam it, it would sometimes send shooting pains up my arm :\

you have more than likely chipped the knuckles of your finger. did it playing football years ago (shot straight to the thumb. swelled up imediately and bruised.)

if you go o the odctor they will not be able to do anything except stra it up an tell you to rest it. you did what i did, which was to play on. very bad idea. i have now chiped about 4 fingers. hurts like fuck... but it will be fine. make sure you keep it limber otherwise the bones can sometimes fuse in weird ways preventing you having full mobility. which happened to my mates ankle.

basketball is a great sport but a total figer killer.

the lumpy thing could indeed be tendon damage. i have a lump on my left middle finger like that where the arthritis has fucked up the tendon.

(It looked worse before.. fatter and darker, i mean... but it looks better in the photos above than it actually does now... the flash made the bruising look less severe).

sorry about that. I resized on photobucket.. but it didn't seem to effect it. hmm... anyway, you probably can't make comparisons between left and right based on that... but i can tell you that the left pinky is at least 50% bigger than the right.

OK... now they are smaller... (and keep in mind that the injury happened about 26 hours ago).

Do what other people do. Go to the doctor.

For a jammed finger? All s/he will tell you to do is rest it and dont play basketball for a while. Some people go to the doctor because they have a cold or a headache. :fact:

It still hurts a little (but it's mostly better). That was quite a jam.

The ball basically hit it on the tip.. thus jamming it. why should it be bruised from the top knuckle down to the bottom knuckle? .

Probably because a direct impact at the tip of your finger will dissipate energy and therefore damage/bruising at each joint as it works its way down your unfortunate digit.
I've managed to break my elbow with an impact on my wrist using the same traditional perpendicular impact technique.

If people think it's enough to make a thread about then go to the doc. Do I post every time I have a cold?

So: you asked "what's up with that?" and then you did some searching of your own on this highly technical term of finger jamming.

1. Anything left for us to do, then?

2. Does a musician who suffers this injury while playing informally with other musicians have a jam jam?

I stabbed my finger with a swiss army knife last night. I was screwing down a machine head on my guitar and slipped. Knife tip plunged deep into my middle finger.
Fuckin' hurts a tad. The sad thing is, I fixed the guitar, but can't play it now. :(

So it's all or nothing then? Make a thread and go to the doctor, or don't make a thread and don't go to the doctor? OK, that makes sense.

He hurt his finger so wants to have a chat. Why does that mean he has to go to the doctor aswell? If the subject matter is too trivial for you, then you don't have to post.

Do I post every time I have a cold?
