Saw Gangs of New York at the weekend [ok I know it's been out for ages but for one reason or another I've only just seen it] and was very very disappointed. The book is excellent but Scorcese made the film into a cartoonie overly-stylised story. And Di Caprio and Day-Lewis were just awful.

Got me thinking that everything he's done since Goodfellas has been poor. Cape Fear was way OTT, Age of Innocence dreary, Casino OTT too. I haven't seen The Aviator but don't feel I need to.

But just consider the brilliance of the man before:

Goodfellas (1990)
After Hours (1985)
The King of Comedy (1983)
Raging Bull (1980)
The Last Waltz (1978 )
New York, New York (1977)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)
Mean Streets (1973)

All of these are subtle, clever portraits of America. He seems to want to become a big success now rather than an artist and is choosing the wrong actors.

Shame.

I loved Cape Fear, and thought Casino was ok(ish).. although way too similar to Goodfellas - in a way he was almost parodying himself.

But you're right, pre-Goodfellas he was untouchable.

I often confuse Casino with Goodfellas. Same actors, same roles more or less for Peschi and Di Niro. Although Casino is quite a poor film on reflection.

I felt the same way about Aviator, too, but saw it on DVD this weekend and found it to be an entertaining couple of hours in a not-changing-your-life-very-much sort of a way.

I wouldn't make a point of watching it again as I would, and have done, with some of the other films you've listed.

......but Scorcese made the film into a cartoonie overly-stylised story. Not the power he was, for sure, but with GONY he clashed badly with Miramax head Harvey Weinstein, and the resulting cut is very much a compromise of ideals. A Director's cut would be most welcome.

I've always been disapointed with the flick after reading the book first. In fact I can recall just one time when the flick lived up to expectations and that was "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" with Saint Jack!

I love Martin Scorsese films personally. How that guy hasn't won an oscar yet, defies belief.

Well clearly you must be doing something right as an actor to move into Deniro's shoes. Can't see that kind of thing happening to Orlando Bloom somehow.

But hey, if you think you can make a better film than the legend Scorsese himself ..........

Quite. He's been nominated for best director five times. Ah well, Hitchcock never won one either.

The Departed. Saw it on Monday, awesome movie. It's up their with Goodfellas, Jack Nicholsons character is terryifying. Even DiCaprio is good.

People underestimate DiCaprio. He has made some very poor choices and has been caught in this teenage idol thing, but I think he is a good actor. Check 'This boy's life', 'What's eating Gilbert Grape' or 'the Basketball Diaries'.

:stupid: It was the whole Titanic thing that did it. That and Romeo + Julliet.

Indeed, the guy has immense talent and it looks like 'The Departed' is the final piece in the jigsaw of proving all the annoying doubters wrong.

Then my estimation of you as a critic have gone down a peg or two. It will never be surpassed, certainly not in box office receipts.

That said, i understand 'The Departed' is more of a guys film.

Seriously, I like Di Caprio and the work he's done with Scorsese has certainly been his best stuff. Nice to see, from the reviews, that Scorsese is back on top form as well. Wonder if he'll get that elusive Oscar this year?

The Departed is a brilliant movie. The ending was a bit fucked up, though. I wont say its a bad ending because it completely shocked the hell out of me. But mostly its a :wtf: kind of ending. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. And you'll want to watch it a gain just to figure it out.

DiCaprio is a great actor and its Scorsese that was the first to realise it. I love the way they keep making films together. Its a great partnership and long may it continue.

It's about time... he might get the lifetime achievement one to make up for all the times he was in the 'close but no cigar' seat

I'm sure I opined on this thread before.
Either its been removed , or I didn't.

anyway , A quick resume' of what I thought I'd written (perhaps we had a vote on the best Scorsese film some time ago0 , and i'm getting all mixed up), concerning Martin.

(to me) Scorsese and Robert de Niro are one and the same . One cannot function properly without the other. Apart from a breif interlude when De Niro left the camp and made 'Once Upon A Time In America' with Sergio Leone , <<which is without doubt the best film ever made in the history of life as we know it>> , Scorcese has made very poor choices in his leading actor roles since Robert Of Niro pulled out of full time acting.
I don't think I'm being an ageist twat by saying that Leanardo diCapricorn is not in anyway a suitable replacemant for Bobby, emporer of Niro.

conclusion is : Scorcese has lost the plot.

Conclusion is you're talking out of your arse. Luckily you're the only one on this board to discredit Leos shining performance in this film. He will get the long deserved oscar, then i will laugh at you.

Leonardo DiCaprio has matured nicely and fullfills the role of undercover cop tremendously well. He knits in with a local criminal, gang in Boston, headed by Jack Nicholson who's ability to play slightly nuts is a vision to watch.

Matt Damon is the cop who works for Jack from the inside.

Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen also put in stirling performances although I felt Mark Wahlberg was a little overacting at times as the three try and track down the mole in their part of the state polcie service...with the help of Leo.

Scorcesee does not dissapoint in his presentation of this story and I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes a gritty crime drama
