Dawn of the Dead
Erin Brockovich
I've probably seen about the same number. Another fatuous list designed to fill hours of tv for bugger all cost. And wtf are those 4 in the list for?
fool's paradise Jul 24, 2006, 13:50 I would like to swap Erin Brockovich for Zulu for a start. Also The Royal Tenenbaums doesnt belong there nor does Terminator 2: Judgement Day. My Fair Lady, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and The Women do.
edit: As does Steel Magnolias
Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 13:51 Quite. Presumably because they're seen as classics of their genre.
A bit like Pink Flamingoes. Why anyone needs to see that nowadays, God only knows.
gwyatt Jul 24, 2006, 13:52 why isn't Citizen Kane or Bicycle Thieves or Jules et Jim innit?
Because it is a wanky list.
Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 13:56 And Walkabout makes the cut and Don't Look Now doesn't. Pish.
fool's paradise Jul 24, 2006, 13:58 A classic to me is something that you could sit down and watch in 50 years time and it's still good. To be fair they did get a lot of them right but I don't think Brazil should be on there, mainly because it is a very very hard going movie. I personally love it but then I am a sci-fi nerd. I may be wrong here but I don't think many people could take watching the directors cut of it.
Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 14:12 Actually, the more you look at it the harder it is to see any point at all. It can't be what they think these are the best films ever made, unless they genuinely think Sexy Beast is better than the Godfather.
Maybe it's something to do with Sexy Beast being on Film Four this week and the Godfather isn't. Just maybe.
A bit like Pink Flamingoes. Why anyone needs to see that nowadays, God only knows.
When I next have spare cash I'm planning to buy it ;)
I don't think Lost in Translation should have been on there or Trainspotting. Fair enough they're good films but they're not that good.
Was glad to seen Princess Mononoke on there, Hayao Miyazaki is awesome.
Would have liked to see Oldboy on there. Definately a film everyone should see.
stevie_b Jul 24, 2006, 14:28 Ooh conspiracy theorist. I personally thought Sexy Beast was shite. Once Ben Kingsley dies it becomes utter pointless viewing.
The only ones I've seen:
Alien - Shit scary and compulsive viewing. The sequels don't do the original justice in the slightest.
Boyz N the Hood - the original hood movie. If that's a reason to watch it then fair play, but it's otherwise forgettable.
Breakfast Club, The - I found this boring and only watched it because it was on at about 1am and I couldn't sleep
City of God - Excellent - a gangster film with a difference. Well worth a watch
Dawn of the Dead - Yeah great Zombie movies blah blah
Donnie Darko - A good film with a nice twist. I enjoyed it but I'm not sure it's as good as people make out
Fight Club - A very good film. Worth watching for the twist.
Ladykillers, The - A classic. I was happy to watch it for Alec Guinness
Lost in Translation - Utter tosh. Boring and pretentious. You'll want your 2 hours back
Pulp Fiction - A good entertaining story about gangsters. Over rated but still enjoyable
Scarface - A classic. I'd put Carlito's way on the list aswell, as it portrays Pacino as almost the opposite to Tony Montana in Scarface
Sexy Beast - as above
Shawshank Redemption, The - it's been a few years, but I remember it being a little slow but with a good twist and ultimately worth the watch
Terminator 2: Judgement Day - disappointed to see this one and not the original on the list, which is much better.
Trainspotting - Great film which deserves to be on this list.
comababy Jul 24, 2006, 14:57 All bar Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. Grr...
The list: annoying not because it's a bad list, but because it's full of films whose makers have done better things, i.e. Sexy Beast. Really it's a load of old gangster twaddle with a flashy gloss. Glazer's next, Birth, was miles better and really rather good, but it virtually vanished on release. Check it out when you can.
The Ox Jul 24, 2006, 17:40 I've seen 4 and have about another dozen in my cupboard to watch. I'm not a film buff.
UnoChild Jul 24, 2006, 17:50 The Royal Tenenbaums doesnt belong there nor does Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Get t'fuck. T2 is IMO the greatest sci-fi/action film of all time. Great combination of story and effects.. was visually ahead of it's time 15 years ago, and looks better than a lot of films today.
Great great film.
Maybe it's something to do with Sexy Beast being on Film Four this week and the Godfather isn't. Just maybe.
Definitely.
fool's paradise Jul 24, 2006, 17:51 Just thinking, if someone put a gun to my head and said pick three films to watch you are about to die. They would be Bambi, Pirates of the Caribbean and Shrek. Why are all the movies on that list so serious? imo if you haven't seen Bambi then you have missed out on far more than if you haven't seen The Breakfast Club.
Flip Flopper Jul 24, 2006, 18:20 A joke of a list.
WTF was The Ipcress File doing on it?
There are many others just as undeserving but no one seems to have mentioned that one.
Filmfour's upcoming schedule totally dictated the list. Talk about the tail wagging the dog.
Pathetic.
Ipcress file is great if only for the supermarket scene. Bond wouldn't do that.
netniV Jul 24, 2006, 20:17 IPCress was great at providing a workman's version of a spy that we could concievably believe existed in the world. I suspect that all spys grow up now looking to wear thick rimmed glasses and get induced with drugs to give that psyco-delic imagery. :)
TEAM EDNA Jul 24, 2006, 20:22 A joke of a list.
Filmfour's upcoming schedule totally dictated the list. Talk about the tail wagging the dog.
Pathetic.
Surprise surprise you dont like it!
And I think Film four are showing the films off the list as its their list of films to see before you die.
Or is that a bit too obvious?
I'm glad City Of God was high in there fucking brilliant film.
Beatrix Kiddo Jul 31, 2006, 16:00 i've got no comment on this list other than:
Why in FUCK could it possibly be necessary to watch Lost in Translation before you die, or at all for that matter?
Scarlett's Johansson's ass is not a relevant reason, either. I saw it and was hardly impressed.
also, personally i think Battle Royale should be on that list. best to watch it as a youth so the director gets his "don't trust adults" message across.
Marmite Aug 11, 2006, 13:44 Oh...It just sooo happens that the '50 films to see before you die' are now all playing this season free on Film4.
Bloody Donnie Darko. Shite.
dogbomb Aug 14, 2006, 10:21 Bloody Donnie Darko. Shite.
Why? Have you seen the directors cut, it's much better.
Daveyboy Aug 14, 2006, 10:26 Seen 47 now. Finally got around to seeing Hero. Bloody excellent film.
dogbomb Aug 14, 2006, 10:30 Seen 47 now. Finally got around to seeing Hero. Bloody excellent film.
What are the 3 you haven't seen?
Daveyboy Aug 14, 2006, 10:33 What are the 3 you haven't seen?
Come and See, Laagaan and Princess Mononoke.
Flip Flopper Aug 14, 2006, 11:45 Come and See, Laagaan and Princess Mononoke.
Does it concern you that you might die after watching those three?! :)
Daveyboy Aug 14, 2006, 11:47 Does it concern you that you might die after watching those three?! :)
It's a bit of a worry I must admit.
Amanda Huggenkiss Aug 14, 2006, 15:01 Princess Monoke was on a couple of times last week wasn't it?
Mnemosyne Aug 14, 2006, 17:26 yes and jolly good it was too
New York City Aug 15, 2006, 21:58 2001: A Space Odyssey: unforgettable
A Bout de Souffle: whutdat?
Aguirre, the Wrath of God: Kinski's Klowning is Krap
Alien: love it
All About Eve: great movie
Apartment, The: would rather force a numchuck down my pisshole
Apocalypse Now: whatever
Badlands: whereever
Black Narcissus: Yawn
Boyz N the Hood: *thud*
Brazil: great movie!!
Breakfast Club, The: actually the weakest of Hughes 80's films
Cabaret: Yack, bleagh, vomit, purge
Chinatown: Not my favorite Polanski
City of God: feh
Come and See: huh?
Dawn of the Dead: NoTLD is the more significant movie I would have thought
Donnie Darko: interesting but overrated and incoherent
Erin Brockovich: Silkwood kicks this thing to the curb
Fanny and Alexander: Not my favorite Bergman
Fight Club: pile of shit redeemed by cute cast
Heavenly Creatures: Interesting failure
Hero: ??
Ipcress File, The: ???
King of Comedy, The: Not my favorite Scorsese
Ladykillers, The: Has dated badly
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India: ?????
Lost in Translation: a cute chick flick
Manhattan: Beautifully filmed, well-acted, leaves me cold
Manhunter: No
Mulholland Drive: Yes! But Lost Highway is the sexier and more frightening film
Night at the Opera: Not my favorite Marx Brothers
North by Northwest: Not my favorite Hitchcock
Pink Flamingos: Curiousity value only
Player, The: smug self-reflective shit. Altman's "Wedding" "3 women" and "Popeye" were better.
Princess Mononoke: prefer "Spirited Away"
Pulp Fiction: absolute fucking gash
Raising Arizona: mean-spirited drivel barely above the level of an average Tom & Jerry cartoon
Royal Tenenbaums, The: smug self-reflective shit
Scarface: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! the HAIR!!!!
Searchers, The: eh
Secrets and Lies: meh
Sexy Beast: bleh
Shawshank Redemption, The: sentimental crap
Terminator 2: Judgement Day: HAHAHAHAHAHA!
This Sporting Life: Haven't seen this but want to
Three Colours Blue: ditto
Touch of Evil: Should re-watch this. Didn't do much for me the first time (expected more "mystery")
Trainspotting: tiresome, juvenile, vulgar, sadistic and twisted the tragic elements of the book into a series of sick jokes
Walkabout: fascinating film
TEAM EDNA Aug 15, 2006, 22:14 Barry Norman you aint.
quite frankly im concerned that theres absolutely no porn in there. although i agree that Bambi is a must, if it was imperitive to you that you watch all of them , im assuming you're the type of person that would never get to see actual nakedness. and so porn is a must is it not?
Oh and the big lebowski.- "Dude...Beverage"
hi by the way, its Red, have been away for a few.... well years.
TEAM EDNA Aug 15, 2006, 22:45 Hey Red long time no see :)
No porn film is really top notch and I dont think Piss Party 9 got a full cinematic release
good pont well made. i just like to think of it as if id never seen a movie ever, and im gonna die in 50 movies time, id like to see some action if i wasnt taking part in it. isnt that the point actually, if you are gonna die, why watch ,movies? why not go jump out of planes and eat rats and things like that.
Zapdos Aug 21, 2006, 03:27 I've seen 8 in that list, and I doubt I'll watch the others to tell the truth.
Beatrix Kiddo Aug 22, 2006, 06:31 I've seen 46 of them.
A Bout de Souffle
Chinatown
Dawn of the Dead
Donnie Darko
Erin Brockovich
Fight Club
Lost in Translation
Manhattan
Pulp Fiction
Scarface
Shawshank Redemption, The
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Trainspotting
see these. overall seems like a crap list to me. i'd hardly regardly lost in translation as film to see before you die. unless you want to see something so boring you'll want to die.
thesmileyone Aug 22, 2006, 09:23 The fact that it doesn't feature any Asian cinema makes that list irrelevant. Lost in Translation also bored me to tears. And "The Breakfast Club" for gods sake - it might have been considered good in the 80s but its hardly a cinematic high point.
hugo-a-gogo Aug 22, 2006, 11:22 asian films
Hero
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
Princess Mononoke
i don't think it's an exhaustive list by any means, but pretty much all of those films are worth seeing, preferably before you die
fool's paradise Aug 22, 2006, 11:33 hang on a second....just noticed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon isn't on the list, therefore the list in my eyes is now absolute bollocks.
I would say that along with Crouching Tiger, Police Story 1 and 2 (subtitled, don't bother with the dubbed versions) are absolute must sees.
hugo-a-gogo Aug 22, 2006, 11:38 is the list secretly called "these are the fifty best films ever and all others are shit" and i haven't noticed or what?
there are other good films, obviously
enourmous david Aug 22, 2006, 13:34 So, you mean these are just 50 of the films to see before I die, not the only films to see before I die, makes sense to me.
thesmileyone Aug 22, 2006, 14:15 it should be "50 films to see before you die if you like being told what to think"
when I said Asian films I meant Japan, Korea, Thailand rather than the Indian subcontinent.
hugo-a-gogo Aug 22, 2006, 14:17 only one of those films is indian
magicguppy Aug 22, 2006, 14:47 Which one? Hero?
Ehm - anyway. I have a book called 1001 films you must see before you die and it is full of great films. Excellent book. However, in the greater scheme of things, just like Film 4 are trying to attract viewers, this book is trying sell copies. Hence, there is no porn in it. I reckon if you die without having ever seen a porn film, 1001 classics or not, you are in defecit.
hugo-a-gogo Aug 22, 2006, 14:59 the clue is in the name: Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
Hero is Chinese
Princess Mononoke is Japanese
Beatrix Kiddo Aug 23, 2006, 07:08 the clue is in the name: Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
:haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha:
Beatrix Kiddo Aug 23, 2006, 07:10 :wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:
neither The Godfather nor The Godfather, Part 2 is on the list.
list is total complete absolute FUCKING dogshit.
hugo-a-gogo Aug 23, 2006, 07:20 i refer the teenager from Buttfuck, OK to my previous point
Beatrix Kiddo Aug 23, 2006, 07:23 who cares
Naraku Aug 23, 2006, 09:59 Reading through the list i've seen 20 of them, the one's I haven't seen I doubt i'll see. They missed a lot of what i'd consider 'real' classics off that list, but then with a limited list of that size and everybodys individual tastes, with that list being from Film Four, i can see why it has a lot of stuff missing and being replaced with more unusual choices.
comababy Aug 23, 2006, 11:43 :wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:
neither The Godfather nor The Godfather, Part 2 is on the list.
list is total complete absolute FUCKING dogshit.
The democracy of the list seems to be only one film per director, and Coppola is already on there with the superior Apocalypse Now.
