It's an enjoyable easy to watch sort of ting. For me: anything by Charlie Chaplin any `classic' Iranian film any silent film any Westerns any Horror films any film that is over 3 hours long - I just can't still that long Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 14:40 Well, I've seen all of those.... 2001-great at the time but very dated. Erin Brokovic-Totally overrated. Julia Roberts' performance is all over the place. SOTL-Not bad at all. Hopkins is great. K v K-Saw it when it first came out. Complete and utter shit. Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 14:42 anything by Charlie Chaplin any `classic' Iranian film any silent film any Westerns any Horror films any film that is over 3 hours long - I just can't still that long I'll give you Chaplin, but you're just being silly on the rest. stevie_b Jul 24, 2006, 14:57 I'm surprised you can't be bothered to watch Silence of the Lambs. It's an enjoyable easy to watch sort of ting. It's one of those films where I've always thought about watching it but can't be bothered to go out of my way for it. If they show it on tele I'll most likely watch it. More: Casablanca Citizen Kane One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest A Clockwork Orange The Shining Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 15:01 Stevie, are these films you haven't seen at all, or just wouldn't bother watching again? That last lot, I'd recommend that everybody watch them at least once. Can I nominate Sound of Music Wizard of Oz Rocky Horror stevie_b Jul 24, 2006, 15:04 They're just films I've never seen but heard are great, and yet don't feel the need to go out of my way to watch them. Rocky Horror is another gwyatt Jul 24, 2006, 15:09 Casablanca Citizen Kane One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest A Clockwork Orange The Shining Citizen Kane is fantastic but you need to see it alone, best in a cinema. Watch it at home with others and you'll last 5 minutes. The Shining needs to be seen at night. Scary as shit. Casablanca I can take or leave. Same for OFOTCN. comababy Jul 24, 2006, 15:10 2001: A Space Odyssey - Masterful. Makes most other films look like they're not even trying. However: Erin Brockovich Silence Of The Lambs Kramer vs KramerAye, you can avoid that shite. Daveyboy Jul 24, 2006, 15:12 Casablanca, I reckon, gets better the more you watch it. One of the most quotable films ever. Hamry Jul 24, 2006, 16:35 Sound of Music Wizard of Oz Rocky Horror I think you definately should give these ones a try. I love them all, even though Wizard of Oz is really tacky. Rocky Horror is real good but the show is better, you should go see it at the theatre ;) great fun! I went all by myself recently and was scared shitless but it was the most fun I'd had in ages. Brokeback Mountain is one that I've been told is really good but I just can't be bothered to watch it. Mulholland Drive is something my film teacher always tells me to watch along with 2001 - I've seen clips but not all of it loki Jul 24, 2006, 16:43 Citizen Kane is fantastic. As for Chaplin films , in historical perspective , some were radical and subversive . But if I had to watch any ( except for the Great Dictator ) I think I would have to chew my legs off. dexcel13 Jul 24, 2006, 20:19 there are ltos of films that i don't catch at the cinema but eventually get round to seeing and i wish i had bothered to see them at the cinema, Like lord of the rings, watched it ona crumy 16 inch tv, liked it enough that i wnet and rented the other two and watched them back to back Star Wars was one set of films that i never got round to watching until about 2 years ago, never realy had any motivation for them, thta i think i could take it or leave it TEAM EDNA Jul 24, 2006, 20:26 Casablanca,...... One of the most mis-quoted films ever. Fixxxed Gone With The Wind. Beatrix Kiddo Aug 23, 2006, 07:20 Citizen Kane and Casablanca both. i feel like a half-assing undedicated film buff since i haven't seen either, but i just can't be assed... i'll get around to it sometimes. Star Wars... fuck, everyone's always going on about how great it is. i bought the trilogy (the originals) and had to flick it off after about 5 minutes. it's for nerds, anyway. New York City Aug 23, 2006, 14:53 Loki, I'd give "Modern Times" by Chaplin a go, and possibly "The Gold Rush." Both extremely enjoyable, very sweetly funny and with excellent original scores. I'm not much one for Bogart films, "The African Queen" and "The Big Sleep" aside. Watched about a half hour of "Blow-up" before losing interest. Woody Allen's earlier "funnier" films do nothing at all for me, and I have skipped most of them, with the exception of "Love and Death," which is actually pretty good. enourmous david Aug 23, 2006, 16:02 Silence Of The Lambs As is so often the case, the original was better imo. I saw Manhunter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091474/) after I had seen Silence of the Lambs and I was suprised at how much better it was. I think SOTL is pretty run of the mill in comparison to Manhunter. Marx Aug 23, 2006, 16:28 Genuinely love Casablanca. I think it was years ahead of its time. comababy Aug 23, 2006, 17:15 As is so often the case, the original was better imo. Eh? SOTL the book/film is the sequel to Manhunter, which in book form was originally published as Red Dragon (1985), and is by far the best book from Thomas Harris. An absolute cracker if you haven't read it. To confuse matters further, Red Dragon/Manhunter was remade in 2002, and despite a strong cast (plus Hopkins doing his schtick once more of course) was very much a jobsworth adaptation from a jobsworth director (Brett Ratner). Audiences weren't much bothered. As I've mentioned elsewhere, there's more of this guff coming soon. enourmous david Aug 23, 2006, 17:27 Sorry, that was my klutz way of saying the first in the 'series' was better. safeasfuck Aug 25, 2006, 08:41 despite a lot of my mates being big fans & raving about his films & i personally won't watch anything with woody allen in it. i've endured short bursts of a few of his films and found them stupendously tedious. it doesn't help that i think he's a self-obsessd mysoginistic egomaniac with a misplaced persecution complex (& generally a bit of a cock tbh) ditto peter sellers "pink panther" films which, if childhood memories are correct, last for at least 15 hours each & contain nothing but a lot of 3rd rate slapstick and some "hilarious" misunderstandings on account of a funny accent The Ox Aug 25, 2006, 08:43 Woody Allen is a cunt. Format for a typical WA film: Big nose toss-bag wanders round New York perving at girls and talking in that ''FUCKING NORA! SHOOT ME IN THE HEAD!!!'' voice. comababy Aug 26, 2006, 22:47 despite a lot of my mates being big fans & raving about his films & i personally won't watch anything with woody allen in it. i've endured short bursts of a few of his films and found them stupendously tedious. I like some of his films, but he really should've called it a day after Hannah and her Sisters because he's been almost invariably rubbish since. ditto peter sellers "pink panther" films which, if childhood memories are correct, last for at least 15 hours each & contain nothing but a lot of 3rd rate slapstick and some "hilarious" misunderstandings on account of a funny accent A Shot In The Dark is the best by far. You don't really need the others. Mnemosyne Aug 27, 2006, 06:20 re Woody Allen I remember going to see Annie Hall at the cinema when it was released. It wasn't bad, very much a film of it's time, otheriwise I can't think of anything he's done that I've enjoyed Tobester Aug 30, 2006, 20:53 La Dolce Vita. Tedious long-winding overrated drivel about uninteresting characters doing uninteresting things for 3 hours. I sat through it once, bit it was torture. NEVER again. madpinkflamingo Sep 10, 2006, 10:26 who said Clocky Orange - you seriously have got to see that film. Altho I realise thats the point of this thread. I wouldnt watch: The Matrix Mission Impossible Gone with the Wind Bourne Identity or basically anything my parents go to see at pictures on a Tuesday afternoon and come back and say 'Oh we were the only ones in, it was like a private screening'. UnoChild Sep 11, 2006, 10:04 ditto peter sellers "pink panther" films which, if childhood memories are correct, last for at least 15 hours each & contain nothing but a lot of 3rd rate slapstick and some "hilarious" misunderstandings on account of a funny accent Never has the term 'genius' been so fitting for someone as it is with Peter Sellers. I still say that Dr Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the atom bomb) is the funniest film ever made. Sellers is fantastic in it. stevie_b Sep 11, 2006, 12:57 The Matrix Bourne Identity The Bourne Identity is good and I'd say worth a watch. As for the Matrix, the original one was great when it came out, but the other 2 are disappointing. safeasfuck Sep 11, 2006, 13:04 the rocky horror picture show was on TV saturday night, i tried to watch it but i managed less than 10 minutes before wanting to throw the TV or myself out of the window hugo-a-gogo Sep 11, 2006, 13:11 I've had Dr Strangelove DVD in a cupboard for about a year, i've not watched it UnoChild Sep 11, 2006, 13:12 Watch it Hugo. You'll love it. comababy Sep 11, 2006, 16:43 'Tis a shame Sellers cops all the praise for (the very great) Strangelove, as George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden are easily his match. "............precious bodily fluids.." magicguppy Sep 11, 2006, 17:38 Strangelove is a great film. I watch it whenever it's on. Must've seen it 50 odd times. Anyway, I've never seen Deer Hunter all the way through. Seen the end and the first four hours or so. I give up every time. The music doesn't help. As great a score as it is, it's just a little too dry. Can't be arsed watching Hitchcock, although I know I should watch some. Also Zulu is another movie I can't get through. comababy Sep 11, 2006, 20:49 Anyway, I've never seen Deer Hunter all the way through. Seen the end and the first four hours or so. Also Zulu is another movie I can't get through. You really need to see Hitchcock, who embraced the fakery and manipulation of cinema like no one else, and while in some ways very conventional, he also turned cinema inside-out. Start with the big 'uns (Psycho, Rear Window, North By Northwest, Vertigo, The Birds) then find your own way about. The Deer Hunter is an odd one. Bearing in mind its post-Star Wars appearance, this is one of the last great stabs at epic, almost romantic storytelling, shot through with '70's US cynicism. Some find it overblown, but when it's good it's exceptional, with Cimino's handling sometimes breathtaking. Again, one you really need to see for yourself. Btw - there are only two films men actually want to watch on a Bank Holiday. One is Spartacus, the other is Zulu. Grand stuff both. safeasfuck Sep 12, 2006, 13:08 Btw - there are only two films men actually want to watch on a Bank Holiday. One is Spartacus, the other is Zulu. Grand stuff both. :stupid: well said fella Mr. Biscuit Sep 12, 2006, 13:30 Love Casablance, Silence of the Lambs and Citizen Kane, and would recommend the latter to any person with even the remotest interest in films. The film I've yet to see is Sch8indler's list - the other half bought it a couple of months ago and I can't even bring myself to take the cellophane wrapper off it. I'd rather watch my Mighty Boosh box set, much more of a laff, innit. gwyatt Sep 12, 2006, 13:31 Btw - there are only two films men actually want to watch on a Bank Holiday. Grand stuff both. You're forgetting James Bond films (Sean Canary only) GIR Oct 7, 2006, 23:17 I can't be bothered to watch Forrest Gump. And because so many people over the years have told me to watch it, now I really don't want to. And Schindlers' List. Another one was The Exorcist, which I finally was convinced into seeing a few weeks ago. And it was actually pretty damn good. |
