View Full Version : The Descent
seabreeze Aug 29, 2006, 07:06 Has anyone else seen this film? Watched it last night but am confused by the ending. If anyone could shed some light on the matter it would be great.
Film is about 6 females who go down into a maze of caves but there is something sinister down there waiting for them.
UnoChild Aug 29, 2006, 07:09 Erm, can't remember now. I know I loved it.
kurwa mac Aug 29, 2006, 07:20 I thought it was overrated and UK critics went crazy over it just because it was British.
It was very violent and extremely depressing. The ending will have you reaching for the razor blades.
2/5

Regarding the ending -SPOILER ALERT-
I believe...
The lone survivor has gone insane and is under the impression that her dead daughter is in front of her. She was distrubed to start with (what with the horrific death of her husband and daughter) and the situations inside the caves have driven her over the edge.
She is actually sitting in front of a small fire, not her daughter (funny how you get these things mixed up...). The cave creatures can't see, but can hear, feel and smell and I expect they felt/smelt the fire and the final shriek you hear is that of a creature lunging at her to kill her.
So there you go, happy ending ahoy: Stuck in a deep dark underground cave with a load of blood thirsty goblins...and she doesn't even know it.
seabreeze Aug 29, 2006, 07:38 So it was all in her imagination then that she got out and drove away? Take it that all happened whilst she was knocked out and she dreamt it

Yes, I believe that was a false ending.
It was like a dream, didn't something try and grab here inside the car of did she get hit by another car or something?
Anyhow, she is stuck in the cave at the end.
seabreeze Aug 29, 2006, 07:50 Cheers for that. Makes a bit more sense now

notice you hear the oriental lady screaming straight she is surrounded by goblins, indicating she is being ripped apart.
enourmous david Aug 29, 2006, 10:34 I got it on DVD a while back, we watched about 20-30 mins of it beforee giving up. I thought it was a load of tosh.
Flip Flopper Aug 29, 2006, 11:55 Goblins. LOL. Bag of shite.
Daveyboy Aug 29, 2006, 12:00 Sounds like a right load of old bollocks. I think I'll watch it.

Yeah, me too!
magicguppy Aug 29, 2006, 12:31 Made by the same guy as Dog Soldiers, which was also a throroughly excellent peice of film.
Chicks and scary monsters can't fail to be good.
comababy Aug 29, 2006, 12:53 Mark Kermode really likes it, which is usually warning enough.

Oh dear. As long as he's not on the DVD specials.
kurwa mac Aug 29, 2006, 13:13 Believe me: This is prime shite at it's finest.
seabreeze Aug 29, 2006, 13:17 I got it on DVD a while back, we watched about 20-30 mins of it beforee giving up. I thought it was a load of tosh.
It was, but I sat through it
kurwa mac Aug 29, 2006, 13:22 If you think this is bad, see 'The Cave'. It actually came out around the same time as 'The Descent' and is actually multiple times lamer.
butchspangly Aug 29, 2006, 17:50 Gonna go against the masses and say it was an excellant film. It was [i]quite[/] gory but not excessivley so, and was actually needed in the film (I dont normally like thise king of film, for example Creep......wtf?)
Cracking film, very tense and atmospheric.....but then again, what do I know?
seabreeze Aug 29, 2006, 18:21 Creep had the making of a good film but turned out to be a load of crap
kurwa mac Aug 30, 2006, 16:34 Creep had the making of a good film but turned out to be a load of crap
Exactly. Creep turned into a STEAMING load of crap. Rather nasty scenes also.
seabreeze Aug 30, 2006, 17:32 If you think this is bad, see 'The Cave'. It actually came out around the same time as 'The Descent' and is actually multiple times lamer.
Hmmm The Cave is on sky next month. To watch or not to watch...
I enjoyed the Descent, I liked the way the mole men just turned up instead osf there being any sort of legend about them or some other bollocks. Therere are few scenes that are chock full of gore and some bits that made me a jump. Overall a good horror film without all the trappings of the slasher pictures and tiresome remakes being churned out at hollywood.
UnoChild Aug 30, 2006, 18:23 I liked Creep.. ish. It was good until the monster type thing turned up, and you didn't know what the fuck was stalking around.
The torture scene in that was fucking awful.
But then again, I like films like this/that
Marmite Aug 30, 2006, 21:19 Apparently the ending in the UK version of the descent was differant to the US version. I only saw the UK version so cant comment on how it was differant, But I thought it was pretty good...as you were..
Daveyboy Sep 1, 2006, 13:32 Just bought this on DVD (5 for 30 squid at Virgin). It had better be as stupid as you lot make it sound or there'll be trouble.
UnoChild Sep 1, 2006, 14:19 Fiver's a bargain. I paid full price for the fucker when it came out.
seabreeze Sep 1, 2006, 14:23 I just wait till they show all the films on sky. I don`t part with cash easily
Daveyboy Sep 4, 2006, 09:47 Watched it yesterday. Complete tosh, but enjoyable tosh.
