View Full Version : Grease
dominoid Nov 9, 2006, 22:25 Seeing as a debate sparked off about this in the worst films thread I thought we should have a referendum.
Is Grease a great film and does it deserve its "classic" status or is it a pile of wank that should have been buried with quiffs and pink leather back in the sixties?
Mnemosyne Nov 9, 2006, 22:33 It was a tremendously influential film at the time, hugely popular and a real event when we saw it at the cinema.
It may not have aged well, but it was great then
Keith Skedge Nov 9, 2006, 22:34 I won't let it near my bearings unless it's Dickhams.
I'd say it's a classic film, but not one of the best musicals of all time. I'm a huge musical boff and the numbers in this just can't compare to my favourites.
UnoChild Nov 9, 2006, 23:25 It's a classic.
comababy Nov 9, 2006, 23:56 Fun, lightweight kid brother to West Side Story marred by some of the grubbiest cinematography I think I've ever seen.
Hard question.
I dont know. I like some of the lesser characters better than the main ones. I think Danny and Sandy are cheese with a capital Edam, Kenickie and Rizzo are unpleasant to watch, but I quite liked the rest of the T-Birds and Frenchy & Jan from the Pink Ladies. I know it pretty much off by heart and have seen it loads of times, and will always watch it if I happen to come across it on the telly, but I cant say its my favourite film ever, simply because well, it isnt...
Its a bloody sight better than Grease 2 though.
Did you know...
At the time of filming, John Travolta (Danny) was 23, Olivia Newton-John (Sandy) was 29, Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was 34, Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) was 27, Barry Pearl (Doody) was 27, Michael Tucci (Sonny) was 31, Kelly Ward (Putzie) was 22, Didi Conn (Frenchy) was 26, Jamie Donnelly (Jan) was 30 and Dinah Manoff (Marty) was 19.
KIN ELL! RIZZO was 34???!!!???
sysadm Nov 10, 2006, 01:31 Rizzo , when you look closely did in fact look 34.
Olivia has always pulled it off . when she was 12 she looked -17 .
The problem is Capster, if she looked 34 in that film, then I bloody look 52, and Im a year younger than she was then.
WHY DO I HAVE TO START THE GODDAMN ANTI DEPRESSANTS IN THE MORNING WHEN THERES SHIT LIKE THIS TO CONTEND WITH???!!!???
sysadm Nov 10, 2006, 01:57 Body movements , I meant .
If I were going by faces I'd be 64 by now.
Fancy sharing your sweeties!
Lintuk Nov 10, 2006, 02:15 Travolta.
Never a good idea, epecially in spandex
UnoChild Nov 10, 2006, 11:28 What's everyone's favourite song?
Mine is 'We Go Together'.
fool's paradise Nov 10, 2006, 11:36 I would have to go with the classic grease lightning on this one, purely because if you make sure your curtains are very closed you can do the dance to it and are right back at the school Christmas disco.
Mnemosyne Nov 10, 2006, 23:12 Hopelessly devoted
dominoid Nov 10, 2006, 23:18 What's everyone's favourite song?
Mine is 'We Go Together'.
Mine is Sandy.
Why-aye-aye-ayeeeeee...
UnoChild Nov 11, 2006, 00:52 Hopelessly devoted
Aye, tis a good un.
I think I fell in love with Olivia Newton John at one point.
sysadm Nov 11, 2006, 01:18 'Look at me ,i'm Sandra Dee' and 'Sandy' are my two stick out moments.
LordSnot Nov 11, 2006, 12:32 I like Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee and You're the One That I Want. I hate the movie though, it's awful in every possible way.
New York City Nov 11, 2006, 17:59 I confess to liking two or three of the songs, especially "Grease is the word" and "Summer Love."
However, I don't care for Travolta and the rest of the cast, except Olivia, looked like they'd been kept back in high school since the ACTUAL 1950s.
Keith Skedge Nov 12, 2006, 20:46 Mmmm. It's cos they're retards.
I loved Grease...and my daughter loves it now.....very corny and none of the guys in it are fanciable.
Hopelessly Devoted is the best song for me...
However, I think Dirty Dancing has now taken over as one of the best
UnoChild Nov 16, 2006, 13:21 Dirty Dancing isn't technically a musical though, is it. I'm sad however, I like that too. Cracking soundtrack.
[QUOTE=UnoChild;765312]Dirty Dancing isn't technically a musical though, is it. QUOTE]
Why Not
Film + lots of songs = Musical?
And it's now on the stage
If not...what's the criteria? (interested)
UnoChild Nov 16, 2006, 14:42 Because you don't see Patrick Swayze or the other leads breaking into song mid-film (although he did sing a song on the soundtrack)
Uno ,
Would you consider 'Caberet' to be a musical.
UnoChild Dec 9, 2006, 00:44 Dunno, i've never seen it.
what about mary poppins.
musical , or non musical
Marmite Dec 9, 2006, 01:42 a doe? a deer? oh fuck it i cant be bothered.
What's everyone's favourite song?
Mine is 'We Go Together'.
Sandy - for the obscene hot dog/bun thing going on behind John Travoltas head.
We Go Together, coz its a nice happy ending with a fairground.
and There Are Worse Things I Could Do - the song Rizzo sings at the end.
Dirty Dancing isn't technically a musical though, is it. I'm sad however, I like that too. Cracking soundtrack.
Because you don't see Patrick Swayze or the other leads breaking into song mid-film (although he did sing a song on the soundtrack)
On the first point, totally agreed, except for the second point - the one singular blight on an otherwise cracking soundtrack. Shes like the wind through my tree? Cock. Pure cock.
what about mary poppins.
musical , or non musical
Musical. No question.
enourmous david Dec 9, 2006, 07:36 what about mary poppins.
musical , or non musical
Its a musical, but Sherri Bobbins was betterer.
:note: Just Do a Half Assed Job :note:
Skeletorfonze Dec 9, 2006, 21:38 i wouldnt say dirty dancing was a musical either. but i cant quite put my finger on why not.
however, grease is a great family film. some say it has aged badly but i dont think so... how many of us still watch it and bop our heads to the songs? i mean, you could never really get enthralled in it (i doubt you did when it was first released) but its very watchable.
summer lovin, the one that i want and ummmm, nah thats all i can remember.
and of course mary poppins is a musical.
