I saw this for the first time last night on Channel 4 and was amazed at the transformation of Charlize Theron from elegant and beautiful actress to the part as the overweight, beligerent hooker Aileen Wuornos: perhaps America's most famous modern day female serial killer.
At times Wuornos came across as disgusting and repellent and at others she evoked a certain sympathy from me due to the fucked up nature of her life and the vain hope she held out for a 'normal life' with a house, a job and a car.
Her attempts were doomed to failure, forcing her to return to being a hooker, generating a festering resentment inside her for those who looked down on her and, in particular, her clients. Her journey of ultimate self-destruction ended with her arrest in a Daytona bar, her conviction for six murders and her eventual execution by lethal injection after a decade on Florida's death row.
A well deserved best actress Oscar for Charlize Theron and a good performance from Christine Ricci (whom I find strangely attractive) as her naive lesbian lover. I strongly recommend this to those who have yet to see it.
