Is there a particular film that moved you and got you so engrossed in the plot that you forgot yourself and the world about you?

My must see recommendation: Blood Simple (directed by the Coen Brothers; their first film)

Good choices. I think I'd have to go with American History X. Not only top notch performances, but a general storyline that puts our own ideals and values into question in a very disturbing way. If you hate Nazism and racism then watch this film and look out for how many times you get sucked into at least sympathising with the white supremacists. A very clever bit of cinema.

Chasing Amy would have been a helluva better film if the lead female, that would be Amy, didn't inhale helium before spouting her dialogue. I had to stop that movie 'cuz her itsy-bitsy baby voice made me want to put my head through a sliding glass door. Same thing with Rene Zellwiger--I won't see a film she is in--totally ruins it for me. And this is good and bad. Bad because of her increasing popularity with the "yes" men & women. Good 'cuz Hollywood doesn't churn out much I want to see anymore.

end of rant. you may all be excused now.

I LOVE Joey Lauren Adams' voice (the girl in Chasing Amy). It just does something to me... *shiver*

And BTW I agree that "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" is the funniest Kevin Smith movie, but only if someone has seen all the other movies you listed.

And Dogma, That Was Funny At The End, But The Rest Was Poor Chasing Amy was funny and thought provoking, although this only dawned on me about six months after seeing the film. Dogma, is just a superb film, it has many, many levels, and a good religious argument that is only apparent if you look at the underlying thread of the film from the first frame to the last.

I didn't like chasing amy much, Dogma had its moments. I think Clerks is by far the wittiest most original film Kevin Smith has made.
My favorites
1. Apocalypse Now, Brando and Sheen-amazing, Laurence Fishburne an excellent actor even as a youngling
2. The Godfather, the best gangster movie
3. The Big Lebowski, there's a beverage involved here, man
4. Akira, love the scifi, love the japanimation
5. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, it took seeing the new shitty ones for me to understand just how good of a movie this is

Did you see 'City of the Lost Children'? Another excellent film by the same director. I didn't like 'Amelie' as much, though.
Just realized I didn't include any Kubrick films in my top five list, oh well, top ten would have 2. 'Course top ten would have a porno and another Cohen bros. film in it as well...

I'd forgotten about that film. Paul Williams, correct? I saw it at the theatre when it came out...in the late 70's, I think. It was excellant.

Full Metal Jacket...heavy, thought provoking.
Moulin Rouge...a visual feast and fun.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...a trip and a half.
The Sum of Us...innovative, soul-searching, and funny as.
The Fifth Element...campy, sexy, action packed escapism.

have to add one I rented today, called 'Spirited Away,' directed by a Mr. Miyazaki. This is one of the most beautifully animated films I've ever seen. The story has a 'Through the Looking Glass' feel, but the characters are full, and complex, drawing you in. The sceneries are outstanding, the camera angles superb. Excellent film for the kids, but adults will glean so much more.

go on...you know you want to. ;)
