Quite why Sunderland have such a strong fan base was pushed beyond me this week. Sunderland boasts some of the best fans and one of the largest attendances in England yet for some reason they are quite happy to watch their board of directors employ turkey after turkey. After the foolish decision to employ a manager who had not been involved in day to day club football management for 6/7 years they have decided to employ a manager who has spent the last 6 years managing internationally and has never ever managed a team in the premiership.
The 6 years that Mick McCarthy spent at the helm of the Republic of Ireland are a dubious addition to an inadequate CV. 4 years of failure to qualify for a major tournament and a succesfull 2 year spell in qualifying for the World Cup in 2002. The group that Ireland faced to reach this tournament was formidable, Holland and Portugal had strong squads. The Portugal squad was the best in the countries history. Irelands success however was in spite of McCarthy rather than because of him. The team was built around one world class player that McCarthy eventually drove out. Roy Keane had a strong supporting cast, every player in the Ireland squad for the world cup played in the english premiership and many held down first team places at major clubs ie, Keane, Keane, Kelly, Harte , Duff, Given and Quinn. The best group of players that the Republic of Ireland has ever had and perhaps their best ever player at the peak of his career. In the end they only won one game against the mighty Saudi Arabia. So why then all the hype about Mick McCarthy? What was his positive contribution?
Previous to that he had the distinct honour of managing Millwall for a while. I don't even know what division Millwall are in but I'll bet that the experience was no use as preparation for saving a team from relegation in the premiership. The only decision clumsier than trusting your multi-million pound business to Mick McCarthy is allowing your manager to sign Tore Andre Flo for 6 million smackers when every body West of the Andes knows he's a shite bag.
Mrsexybadman is looking forward to seeing first division manager Mick McCarthy managing in the first division
